Free sunglasses for kids from lovely local optician

Took my kids for an eye check today. Found out I am a Very Bad Mother and should have been doing this on a yearly basis. The optician at the optical shop was lovely, and to get the kids in they have a special deal where the kids get free decent sunglasses. It's their own initiative to get parents to bring kids in for eye checks. A no brainer really, coz the eye check is free, so... Free decent sunglasses. You get to feel like you're a good parent, and then you can have cake at cafe lemon. What more can you ask of the end of the school holidays....

Which opticians was it Liza? Ben will probably need new glasses after his next eye hospital appointment.

Hi julie, It was the optical shop on green lanes. Same side as bald wins, bit further down. The optician was great with the kids.

Does anyone happen to know at what age one should start taking them for eye checks?

My two had their first eye test in school when they started in Reception - I think they do this in all Haringay schools? They picked up that my son has a squint and we were referred to an eye clinic.

We are able to test babies as young as 6 months old. The eye test that we (all opticians) perform is not just to asses any potential need for prescription spectacles but more importantly it's a health check for the eyes.

The eye test would pick up on other concerns such as squints, lazy eyes, cataract, etc.

I also recommend Optical Shop on Green Lanes which my husband and I tried following recommendations on here. Parita is excellent, also great customer service and good range of glasses. Its on Green Lanes between Duckett Road and Cavendish Road.

This is quite important. My son was born with a congenital cataract in one eye. His developmental eye test did not test eyes separately and he was in reception before we realised something was wrong and took him to Moorfields. Nothing can be done and he is effectively blind in one eye. Had this been checked for at birth it is possible that some improvement could have been made.
