Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I received an email today about a campaign to increase the number of Blood Donors in the UK, apparently they are struggling to get enough donations.

I have always said I would do it, and my pathological fear of needles has always got in the way, but this time I will try to get over it!

From the email I just got...

"We’ve launched a campaign to recruit 100 thousand donors in 100 days: a campaign we hope you might support. Blood donation is straightforward and absolutely essential to save the lives of thousands of people every year. You can become a blood donor at the web site http://www.blood.co.uk/  or by calling us on 0300 123 23 23."

Morning!  I've just checked out the blood service's website and 8.5 stone isn't mentioned - so they must have changed it - it's now 7 stone 12.  See link below.  The weight part mentions "estimating your blood volume" and that's the chart in the second link.  It might also be worth asking them about donating platelets as, although it's a longer process (90 mins), I think it's easier on the body!  The third link is all about platelets and there's also a link to the blood volume chart.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that!  Do let us know how you get on!

Still too skinny! I'll try eating more (vegetarian) pies.

I can definitely recommend the St Margaret's centre near Oxford Street. Like many people, having had a life saving blood transfusion myself *8pints* in labour, it made me think about what would happen if it hadn't been there.

Unfortunately a few years after I started, I got a particularly harsh letter along the lines of: it seems we've realised that when we gave you blood, we may have also given you mad cow disease and we don't want that back thanks very much, so no more donating for you lady.

No advice or offer of being tested for the Bovine nasty.

If I could, I would. It's not that bad and you get tea and biscuits - so if you can, I recommend you to, you can literally save a life in your lunch hour. It saved mine.

Thought I would let you know I actually made it and gave blood for the first time yesterday. The first attempt had to be aborted as I had a cold.

I have to say I was amazed at the number of people there and the level of effort that clearly has to go into collecting these donations. It reinforced just how important giving blood clearly is.

Thanks for the encouragement from those of you that responded to this post originally.

Congratulations. You now have credit for three sins of your choice.

Well done Justin - and I bet you felt virtuous when you'd finished!!!  Don't forget: the donor folk recommend red wine and chocolate the evening before you donate (to "up the iron", don't you know!!).  It's a hard regime, but I'm sure you could manage it if you tried...
