Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

OK, so I'm just fishing here, but I was hoping that someone can help.

I'm a British-Canadian who lived up and down the ladder from 1996 to 2002 before moving to Sweden (Lived in Stanhope Gardens, Grand Parade (across from the Old Ale), Fairfax Road, Falkland Road, etc.). It might sound strange, but Harringay really became "home" to me, and I've missed it ever since I've been away.

So, I'm now planning to move back within the next few months. Nine years in Sweden have only shown me that I'll never be truly happy with "Swedish culture", whatever that may be.

What I need to do before anything else is to find a job. I currently work as a freelance English copywriter/editor here in Malmö. Before this, I'd worked for IKEA for many years (in my home town of Montreal, then in London, then in Helsingborg, Sweden). I've always been in Customer Services and Communication - both internal communication and external marketing... While in Harringay, I actually worked part-time at The Old ale Emporium for about 3.5 years before leaving Blighty.

I know that this is a long-shot, but if anyone has any suggestions whatsoever about where I could search for work in my field, it'd be most appreciated. I'm highly creative, energetic, and an absolute blast to be around.

Here are my current "company website", my LinkedIn profile, and my sadly-neglected blog.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope to meet you all on The Ladder in the near future.

All the best!

man are you crazy ?

Haringey council has just opened a brand new school in gangland wood green, Im just waiting for the robberies and stabbing reports to come flying in. These people have no sense and have done nothing to try and stop the crime in this area. As for the kids around here there getting worse because they can get away with murder . . .literally.

I lived in Germany for a while whilst serving in the military I love Europe but hate the people to be honest BUT quality of life is better.

I work in construction what is the demand for construction workers like over there Im a plumber by trade ?

As for your job I would suggest gumtree.co.uk its brilliant for all sorts of things. . . . . welcome back to the hood.

Trying to put me off? Won't work; I'm determined. :o)

Yeah, the "quality of life" is better here in Sweden, but then you have to define that term. For me, quality IS having a bit of life, and here, well frankly, it's a bit lacking. Going out during the week in the winter is like taking a leisurely stroll through a cemetery. Dead.

Thanks for the link. I've found others too that might help me out.

It'd be good to meet up for a beer when I'm there. Keep in touch.

Mark, you're in bloody Malmo, of course it's quiet!!! Stockholm or even Gothenburg would be way better if you're looking for a bit of life. Quality of life is much better over there. More bank holidays, less working hours, less pressure, less people. The winters are a bit harsh though.

"Bloody Malmö" is actually the third (or fourth?) largest city in Sweden (population-wise). It's much more lively than Helsingborg, where I lived for a good few years.

And less working hours is right. There's very little work here now - even for Swedes. My girlfriend finished her degree about a year ago, and has applied for well over 30 jobs so far - not so much as an interview. Out of my 50 (or so) friends in London, only two are unemployed, and one of these, a property owner, is not really actively looking for work.

And I miss people. I miss working with people who understand that you don't have to have a series of pointless meetings to come up with a simple solution, or to make an obvious decision. I miss living in a country that isn't virtually closed during July because everyone takes their holiday at the same time.

Don't get me wrong; Sweden has a lot going for it, but it's not for everyone. It's all a matter of opinions and tastes anyway. I know many expats here (in Malmö, Helsingborg, Gothenburg and Stockholm) who would NEVER return to the UK. They love Sweden - and that's great for them... But they also understand my way of seeing things as well.

Oh yeah, sorry. to answer your question, forget it; one of the reasons I'm getting away from here is that there are no jobs. Loads of highly skilled people (in construction/plumbing, you name it) but no work. It's bollocks.

Man what a bummer, I cant wait to get out of this place BUT point taken,

"better the harringay crooklyns you know". well good luck with the job hunting and keep us posted man it would be good to know you sorted your self out.

What? All of them? And where are you living now - some unclaimed rock off the continental shelf?

no i live in haringey mate . . . .why where do you live Damascus im guessing ? ?

Ah, Harringay in Haringey in Europe, then?  Me too.

Well, glad to see you find us all as intolerable as the rest of the Europeans. Nothing like a bit of consistency, mate.

I love Internet forums, me. Non-stop hilarity. Thanks, guys!
I don't want to spoil the show, but I thought you might like to know... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoJGDC10lZw
