Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been down Wightman a couple of times this week noticed the temporary traffic lights across the bridge at Allroy Road. I have seen some pretty large tail backs as a result. Network rail seem to have contractors doing work on NR rail land next to the road.

I was a bit taken aback to see it there later in the week too and that at no point do the NR contractors seem to be doing anything linked to the road other than parking their vans next to where they are working.

Given that it seems the vans are there to on/offload supplies and there is no work being done on the road itself- and that the traffic restrictions would likely be there through out the works including evenings etc- I did wonder if they were taking the p*** a bit here?

I have flagged it to the council, as I am sure you cannot unilaterally put up temp traffic lights-certainly not to park your van close by. They must have some kind of permission... I will let you know what they come back with.

Good point on companies taking liberties, though I’m not necessarily opposed to anything that interrupts the free flow of traffic on Wightman. I’m going to write to the Council and suggest that they make it a permanent parking spot for NR!!!

Ha. Neither am I Hugh, and good idea on the permanence point. This is the key. I am all for making it as hard as possible to move across our streets for those who could care less as they commute through our community.

However, restriction have to be permanent and predictable to encourage people to make other choices, as opposed to them finding out to late once they are stuck in congestion and turning the whole area into a polluted car park.

You’re right of course. Perhaps we should talk to the guy with the van by the old Queen’s Head and ask him how to make Can parking permanent!

Yes the blue van! So close to the traffic lights, so dangerous to cyclists and other road users but year on year that van is there

Drove by yesterday afternoon, no sign of activity apart but for one chap lying down in the cab of the orange van, with his boots sticking out the window, having a nap. We’re all entitled to a break, but since the traffic at the lights was backing up, it didn’t look too impressive.

He put his phone down for long enough to have a nap then....I thought he had it surgically attached to his person

In fairness I went past last night and again this morning and the cones were all at the side of the road. The lights no where to be seen.  This morning the vans were all parked on the footpath on the opposite side of the road.   I know my email had been passed to the highways team so I do not know if that had any impact at all.

Feedback from the Highways team in Haringey... Seems they agree with our assessment and have asked Network Rail to pack up and move their traffic lights!

Thank you for your email.

Network Rail requested permission to work on Wightman Road using temporary traffic lights whilst they undertook specialist works on their land. They were questioned in regards to the need for the lights but gave valid reasons for which they were required.

In the meantime, our inspector has been monitoring the site and has noted the same observations as you.

Because of this, I have this morning raised concern to Network Rail in regards to the apparent lack of need for these lights and requested them to remove them as soon as possible unless they can provide robust reasons for their continued use.

In future, we will be mindful about granting similar request unless they can demonstrate their need.
