Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Okay - HoL is now open range territory - read without log-in

I've been umming and aahing for a while now about opening up the site so that everything can be read without the need to login.

I've just been improving things on our Facebook page so that more content gets read over and goes where we want it! This has meant that now full stories can only be read on HoL, whereas before the whole thing copied over to Facebook. A HoL Facebook user politely suggested it was about time we stopped being coy and came out from behind our log-in wall.

That's prompted me to think again and even see bigger increases to the number of daily users.

Good thing? Bad thing?

Thanks for the feedback Kavitha. As I've said before, it's always been the case that anyone on line can read anything on HoL. There's never been any join-up criteria. Okay, reading what's on HoL is just that little bit easier, but I don't imagine people will browse the threads here unless they have a local interest any more now than they have done in the past. Pretty much all local websites are open range. We seemed to be out of step.

But I'm pleased to hear people's views and have added a question on our Opinion Page which we can leave up for a while and see what response we get.

Is there a way we can change our settings to at least have the option not to have our comments viewed by non HoL members. So many of the discussions are quite specific to the exact location of where we live I personally feel it's taken away a level of privacy.

Okee - re the personal info being indexable - I hope I've already been able to activate a fix for that, Mr G. I've disallowed all profile pages from a Google search plus forum, blogs, groups, photos and videos pages - in fact everything where someone's name is attached bar events listings is excluded from Google search for the time being. It'll take a few days, but any pages currently showing up should be excluded again very soon. This should pretty much put things back to where they were re Google indexing. As for the accessibility of information, as I said above, since anyone could join up previously, I've always regarded information on the the site as open.

Anything else we should disallow?

Is it a God thing? :)

I've just done a google search and only my comments page comes up.  Don't think I've ever posted anything on here that I'd be ashamed to publicise to a wider forum.

Oops - memorable typos! (now fixed thanks). Whatever you find via Google today, you won't find in a few days time. It's now all been excluded from Google search.

Thanks Hugh. I've changed my picture, removed my road and removed my real name from the site for now - don't really like the idea that someone can Google my name and find out the road I live on. Public comments are fine - tend to assume anything I post on the internet is public knowledge (e.g. I have a public Twitter profile with my real name, but I don't link my address to it.)

Just as an aside to that - it may be worth flagging up to people that they may want to rethink their profile settings. I know Google will reindex in a few days or so, but it's good to give people a heads up.

In the interim, I've made address, gender and age private (invisible to all) with immediate effect. So even if someone should happen to Google your page over the next few days, they wont be able to see that info.

We're very sensitive about trying to ensure that no sensitive info is shared on the site. Remember this recent discussion?

Great, thanks.
Responsive if nothing else, eh!
You can control your own privacy settings by going to Settings (top right hand corner) - Privacy - where you can set your profile to be only visible to members.
Thanks again. Doubly responsive! :)

Have you done the same for other search engines?

Depending on how you've chosen to tell Google not to index this site, other search engines (yes, they do exist!) may still be able to index at will.
