This graphic comes from a Which? magazine report, complaining that ebay and Amazon are failing to control profiteering by online market places.

It's sad how they get away with it. Regarding ebay, however, I have noticed people deliberately bidding really high amounts in order to make the product unsellable. Toilet paper for over 10k etc.

Why would they do that? I have sometimes seen tings on eBay that are ludicrously high and was not sure if that was purely speculative or there was some other reason for it?

Purely speculative, I think. It makes for a good headline to call it coronavirus profiteering but as you allude to, it happens on ebay all the time on loads of items. E.g. Do a search for batteries and arrange the search results from high to low, and you'll find someone selling a pack of duracell for £1200.

It would be more interesting to see prices that things have actually sold for on ebay.

Well, it’s edge of the seat time till you’ve researched and added them then.

I think it's worth understanding what data means, and getting to the best data, even if it makes the headline less exciting. For most people, the relevant thing is what the "going rate" for particular items is. It's not difficult to do - you can sort search results for sold items and arrange by price high to low. If I have time later I will. I'd guess it would be somewhere between the "normal" price and the figures quoted by which.

I don't understand why you think for a moment hat HoL has ever been in the business of sensationalist headlines. Profiteering is a term that's been widely used over the past few weeks to describe the actions of some. I used it as what I believed was the the most accurate description of what I was observing. It's been used by the BBC, The Times, The Guardian and the in Parliament

My criticism (such as it was) was more aimed at Which? really, given that's where you took it from. I have no issue with the use of the word profiteering, as such (although it does have legal implications which I why i was surprised you let it go on the other thread when aimed at a local business).
