Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

MANY readers of HoL will use the railway service from nearby stations such as Finsbury Park, Harringay (my local), Hornsey and Alexandra Palace. Services on which there is sometimes standing-room only.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, the boss of Govia blithely remarked that,

"What I can promise is that the trains on Thameslink (Bedford-to-Brighton route) will be more comfortable to stand up in. They have big 'stand-back' areas so people can stand in more comfort."

The comment doesn't offer much comfort.

A huge new franchise – operated by French company Govia – now  includes Great Northern routes as well as the routes of the former First Capital Connect.

Must say that the news will really take the edge off agony I feel as I hand over £916 for my season ticket from Harringay to Kings Cross on Monday

Indian railways of yesteryear used accommodate passengers on carriage roofs. Ungrateful commuters who fail to appreciate Govia's kind offer of easy-standing on the B&B route can still find comfortable seating up on top. "Chai, Chai, Garam Chai, Mem Sahib?"

Drop the ticket price to those of the Indian railways and I'll smile all the way.

Are you sure Thameslink will be stopping at Alexandra Palace, Hornsey, Harringay?

Joe, I don't assert that, I was just drawing attention to the Govia boss's comments on standing.

That's my understanding too.  There will be more trains though, and it looks like the Moorgate trains will also be replaced by the Swanky new Class 700s.  The seating arrangement on the current Moorgate trains is utterly ridiculous for a busy metro service.

While I take your point about short hops, many of the people I get on the train with at Kings Cross in the evenings are heading out to stops out as far as Peterborough and Cambridge. When I squish out at Finsbury Park, even more get in. The prospect of a journey of an hour standing while paying several thousand quid a year is not one I would relish. I once experienced the horror of a rush hour evening Kings Cross to Cambridge service and by the time we got to Meldreth I was on the verge of collapse.

Such a specialist 'hobby' surely belongs behind a password?

The new trains on the Victoria line came with the promise of extra capacity. They do indeed hold more people - they have far fewer seats.   OK from here to Finsbiry Park but that trip to Brixton can get a bit tiring.

To give credit where it's due, there are also 6 extra trains per hour.

304 seats in an old train, 288 maximum (using all the tip-up seats when no wheelchair users are on board) in a new one - figures from Wikipedia.  5% fewer.
