Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

You can read here the story of puppy Madison and Mocha

The Mayhew says "There are already so many unwanted animals in rescue centres like ours that have come from people who buy pets on a whim, especially around Christmas time, without taking into consideration the responsibilities and needs of the pet."

“We see a lot of unwanted dogs as they are bred purely to be sold for profit or used as a breeding machine. It is completely irresponsible to buy a puppy online, from pet shops or from illegal breeders, but unfortunately we see this happen far too often. Purchasing pets in this way fuels the already huge problem of illegal breeding and unwanted animals and animal charities like ours are left to pick up the pieces.”

"We ask that owners think responsibly about where they get their pets from and consider adopting a rescue dog or cat first.”

(Also all rescues urgently need more fosterers who can look after a dog temporarily at home until a permanent home can be found, so that they get a break from kennels - there are many in kennels now facing a lonely Christmas and New Year unless they can get a cosy foster home, such as dogs at All Dogs Matter and Oldies Club and The Mayhew Animal Home and Rescue Remedies)

Examples of two puppies needing homes, who were abandoned around Christmas - Wolfie is a 4 to 5 month old Wolfhound cross and Donna is a 3 month old terrier cross.

Many older dogs were also abandoned at Christmas and need homes. List of animal rescue places here

This 3 month old puppy Lulu was found abandoned in a cat carrier and left for dead - a member of the public contacted an Animal Welfare Officer of The Mayhew Animal Home who rushed her to their vet clinic for urgent help. You can read the story of Lulu who was freezing cold, emaciated and had pneumonia and couldn't be saved. The Mayhew says:-

“To let an animal get to such a neglected state like Lulu and not do anything before it’s too late is cruel and completely irresponsible. We cannot imagine the level of pain that poor Lulu must have been in and only wish that her owner had come to us or another animal welfare organisation first, before abandoning her in a carrier...We encourage people who are having problems taking their pet to the vet or affording treatment to get in contact with us first before the health and wellbeing of their animal deteriorates any further. No matter what the problem is, we do not judge anyone and are here to help the animal and prevent suffering."

A three-month-old puppy, who was purchased as a present, but no longer wanted, has finally found her happily ever after thanks to The Mayhew Animal Home. You can read Ella's story here
The Mayhew’s Head of Animal Welfare, Zoe Edwards, said: “It is completely irresponsible to sell a puppy outside on the streets, but unfortunately we see this kind of situation all too often. Sadly there are lots of unwanted animals in rescue centres like ours that have come in from people who have bought pets on a whim without taking into consideration the responsibilities and needs of looking after them. When getting a new pet you should always consider whether you will be able to look after them correctly. Unfortunately, irresponsible breeders won’t be thinking or asking whether the buyer is able to care and provide for the animal for the rest of its life, both financially and physically. The Mayhew has been inundated with dogs and puppies being abandoned."

If you can, please give a rescued pet a home. Also proper home checks by a rescue are the safest way for rehoming a pet.
