Talking of wildlife - it's been a couple of years since I've seen a kingfisher on the New River, but recently spent almost 10 minutes watching one fishing at the entrance to the New River tunnel at Park Avenue. Sadly didn't have my camera.

Kingfishers sometimes show themselves at the tunnel end of the reservoir at Ally pally, possibly the same ones you saw...
