Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone for chess?

I've recently joined Red Hot Pawn and am thoroughly enjoying it. Play at your own pace with players of similar ability, or above or below. It works a bit like correspondence chess. I'm currently playing two games with friends in different parts of the world ...

Real time 'live' chess is great. i use FICS (free internet chess server) one of the oldest and still free chess sites. Graphics are good and there is no 'timelag'.
Correspondence chess i find way too slow, there is a famous correspondence chess game that has been going on between two families for so long it is inherited by the children to play when they grow up (the very same game).

(side note: turing got the idea of inventing the computer because he was sick of losing at chess so you can thank chess for the computer you are sitting at right now)
Red Hot Pawn runs in a browser so there's no download. It does allow live chess, although in order to see your opponents' moves, you do have to refresh the page, either the browser's refresh button or a built-in button "Refresh this Board" Once you've made your own move, you need to click on "submit move" button.

There are a large number of features built into the web-site and provided you can put up with the advertising, they're free for the most part. If you can't put up with the ads, you can pay a subscription. I put up with the ads.

I'm only using it as a form of correspondence chess because I am about as far away from Harringay as it is possible to get and still be on dry land! One of the features is the ability to set "conditional moves". So if my opponent plays x, the server will automatically play y on my behalf, the move I stored beforehand ...
See you in 50 years ha ha.
Possibly James; I have my father's genes. He will be 96 shortly and although I did beat him at chess this afternoon, he's still going strong! He grasps the notion of playing chess via the 'net, but can't use a computer.
