Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This afternoon my partner heard some crows mobbing a bird and expected to see a heron flying over our garden but it was a Red Kite!  He managed to get one quick shot:

Fantastic. Here's hopping for a breeding pair.
Wonderful photo, the shape and colours so clear. We ll watch out for him and so will the ever vigilant crows of Harringay

Wow!

I wonder if it was a red kite, maybe even this one, that killed & picked clean this pigeon in the photo (early last Thursday) here in Harringay. Before I found this I did see (but mainly hear) a bird I didn't recognize early that same morning. I wondered if it had been a kestrel but now I'm going with red kite!

Looks like whatever the hawk didn't eat, the foxes finished off Matt!

Great news, when kites first moved into an area near my parents, the crows gave them no peace, but after a year or two they were left in peace except when the crows had youngsters. They seemed to learn that the kites are not a threat and normally only feed on carrion.

They reached Oxford a while back after they were re-introduced in the Chilterns over 20 years ago, but I don't think I've ever seen them east of the M25. Of course they used to be so common in London that they were treated as vermin and had a bounty on their heads, so it would be great to have them back here breeding again.

They were all over high Wycombe a few years ago, properly set in, so maybe north london should be due some red kite action soon.
