Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Sky News reports on Croydon court sitting where 34 individuals were facing a judge.

Chairman of the magistrates scentencing committee says 'it's unlikely any of the young offenders will go to jail for their part in the riots' (that's anyone under 18)

Nathan Dempster, an 18-year-old college student of Onslow Road, Croydon, sobbed in front of his mother and grandmother when he was told he would spend another week behind bars after being accused of stealing aftershave from House of Fraser in Croydon.

It went some way towards answering the question everyone has been asking for days: Who are these people who undertook violence, theft and disorder on our streets?

The BBC reports at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court, in north London, where the accused are a broad variety of people with different ethnic backgrounds and job profiles.

Some cases are being referred for sentencing at the Crown Court.

The reason for that is they felt the riot was such an aggravating feature to some of the offences committed, such as burglary, that the Crown Court with its additional powers ought to pass sentence.

The magistrates could only impose a jail term of six months - at the Crown Court, that sentence could be up to 10 years.

I don't see how they could lock up everyone they've already arrested, let alone the ones they hope to catch retrospectively based on video evidence. Isn't the prison system already overcrowded? Perhaps they could be given community clean-up sentences, or work for no pay in the businesses they have tried to ruin. I think they should jail the arsonists, though - they showed callous disregard for human life.
Community Payback I think is what you're referring to. Yes that could be used quite effectively. As far as jail capacity is concerned the govt is ready to expand capacity as necessary. They used to have a ship off Portland. I believe the UK has just decommissioned its only aircraft carrier (ludicrously).

Some pundits have noted the extraordinary youth of the yoofs involved. I suggest that, for any under the age of criminal responsibility (10 in England and Wales), their delinquent parents should be held responsible. It was predictable that young offenders are unlikely to be jailed. If any are jailed, let us see if any serve anywhere near their sentences. Perhaps they should be offered the option of some physical punishment.

Some may remember American vandal and general delinquent Michael Fay (controversially) received four strokes of a cane across his bare buttocks in Singapore in 1994, but not in public. President Clinton found time to protest this punishment. It's fair to say some states treat misbehaviour more seriously than others.

That sounds barbaric to me.

As barbaric as running down and killing three young men?

As barbaric as robbing a victim of an earlier mugging as he lay injured on the ground ?

As barbaric as putting an elderly passerby in intensive care where he can't even be identified because his documents have been stolen ?

I don't think public flogging would lead us to a more civilised society.

No. The feral scum ( sorry Stephen :-) ) would flaunt the stripes as a badge of honour.

The feral scum is a product of wonderful  British Society of the last thirty years.. I mean all governments since Thatcher. So perhaps you got what you deserve, or at least harvested what has been sown..

Why are most people so angry? Because they are scared about losing 'their property' - not their community - most disappeared long ago in the UK.  Property is all that counts in Britain ' .

The way wealth is created in the UK is 'arse about face' - People only earn on their 'properties' - fewer by decent hard work manufacturing things .. A get rich quick society has hit the rails.. Only service jobs in Haringey for Cs & Ds-  no apprenticeships - no respect for hand workers, traders ..just take it and run.. like the politicians, the bankers did before the them..

Take away the benefits of the scum? Yes and then start buying guns to protect your 'properties' (that word just won't go away will it) ..

If it wasn't so sad it would be very amusing.. reading all these reactionary comments..

And HOL? does it reflect the so-called community? Yes, but only if you're white faced and well situated..

Stephen, do Germans not think that being "scared about losing their property" is a legitimate concern? Marxism has views about the word "property" that can't go away - for you. Marxism is a point of view, but I don't think its relevant here.

Are you suggesting that Berlin shopkeepers would not also feel aggrieved at have their wares removed without payment through broken windows? Or if their businesses were destroyed?

Property is not "all that counts in Britain". Jobs count, livelihoods count, health counts and lives count. I doubt that Germany is much different.

You're right Stephen, unfortunately.

Oh course, things aren't perfect in Germany. Let's remember that too!

Clive you miss the point.. Germans buy 'properties' as homes, to live in. for their children..  Not as speculative investments.. Most people only ever buy one property in their whole lifetime..

Those who don't earn enough are able to rent privately or through associations well mantained homes at decent rents, very well protected legally and most importantly are not looked down upon by the the rest.

i.e. Banks are required by law to offer 'deposit accounts' in the name of the landlord  for renters who only get their money back when OK'd  by the landlord.. This is also made aware to the State tax department..

The Government applies a levy on all employers of over ten or more who don't 'invest in the future' by offering apprenticeships each year.. Of course there are tax breaks for those that do.

At business lunches and privately here, it always was a bit of a joke to us about how the Brits always were continually  bragging about the current 'virtual' value of their 'property'..

We probably have more riots than you do .. Every year on Walpurgnisnacht & 1st May, but these are more rituals .. left wing and anarchists against the police with little if no looting. Berliners don't take them '''''too'''''' seriously.

I've given this link before.. but maybe you never saw it:

These are the ways to cure the problem..

and no not everything is perfect... but it is 'now' a very liberal friendly society..

BTW, surprised to read this in the Torygraph..
