Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My rubbish has not been collected this morning eventhough my neighbours ones has.

Is there a number I can call to complain to the council and get my rubbish bin emptied?

If possible, Neil, some photos sent to Haringey may be helpful. Perhaps you'd arrange to take some immediately after the waste crew have left? That way the council staff who monitor the Veolia contract can view the problem as it happens.

As John McMullan suggested, you could sign-up to Flickr. It's free for up to 300MB of photos each calendar month. I'm assured that Haringey's front-line staff do have access to Flickr and other social media sites. (Although the head honchos still seem terrified of this for most of their staff.)

I'm not sure what you meant by "all over the place", Neil.

In the past I've had complaints from residents that other people's bins were returned. Or that bins were left on the pavement. Or that rubbish was spilled or strewn about. That's why I suggested photos.

This is our first Christmas/New Year holiday with the new system. In our street the collection is running two days late. So plainly, "the best laid schemes gang aft agley". But as - hopefully - things start getting back to normal I'll be out and about with my camera.

Expectations? Veolia can expect us to put the bins just inside our front gate and we expect them to return the bins there. Which is what happens.

I think it was Ephraim Kishon who dropped a paper bag in Switzerland and had it returned to him - cleaned, pressed and sealed in a plastic bag - at the airport as he left.

There is a wonderful old Stanley Baxter sketch were he (in drag) confronts a motorist who has just dropped an empty fag packet out of the window at a set of traffic light. She picks it up and offers it back to the motorist.
'I think you may have dropped this' she say imperiously.
'But I don't want it ' he says.
'Neither does the Royal Borough of Tunbridge Wells' she says in best Downton Abbey tones.
Perhaps something we could try here.

Ephraim Kishon's humorous piece was basically the same extended joke. So when he surreptitiously drops a paper cake plate from a Swiss tram window the driver slams on the brakes and politely retrieves it from under the wheels.

hello Alan,

I have taken some pics from the front of my house with my bins full. My id is woljap007, if your interested

Hi Bulent, I have indeed looked at your two photos. However I don't know where you live. And the photos don't tell Veolia or Haringey.

Can I please suggest that if you haven't already done so, you phone Veolia and give them your address, asking if they are running late; and if so when they're coming.

If they've been and not collected your rubbish ask the person you talk to - and it's a person not a machine - to report it as a missed collection.

You can also use the online reporting form on this webpage.

Add the link to your Flickr pages if you wish.

Hi Alan,

Yes, I called them twice today. I have my full address and post code and the agent just said they have logged it and passed to their operations team.

Unfortunately, its 5:17pm and there has been no collection, both bins are full

I realise this is a bit of a pain, Bulent. But when you asked them, did they say the collection is running late? Or that they are treating it as a missed collection?

We're in a similar position to you. And when I called earlier today I gave our streetname. But not my name, nor that I'm a councillor. A helpful and patient woman confirmed that both our general and recycled waste were due to be collected yesterday (Thursday 27 December). But that they were running two days late and the collection would be tomorrow. (29 December.)

So I'm not claiming the system is working fine. Plainly there are problems. If I was the Dear Maximum Leader or the "cabinet" member I'd already be talking to Veolia about how they intend to learn from these problems.

Perhaps they are.

I'll  be happy to chase Veolia in my capacity as a councillor. You can give me your details, if you like, via a posting or (if you prefer) a private message on this site, or you can phone 07854 002742 or email me on david.schmitz@haringeylibdems.org or david.schmitz@haringey.gov.uk

David Schmitz

Lib Dem Councillor for Harringay Ward

P.S. This offer is open to anyone who finds that missed collections aren't being remedied or dumped rubbish isn't being removed when they are promised to be.

Hello David,

I have sent an email to you.
