It would be interesting to know if this was actually a real Rubens- I did a quick look up to see what the image was, and found the wiki page very bare...

Apparently..." It was rediscovered at the start of the twentieth century by the art historian Roberto Longhi", so no credit for Mr WH Smith then...

However, when you look for the image online it appears to be in many places, possibly at once. So, I suspect Mr Rubens did not create the one image, but it was a bit of a theme of his, painting a great many of the same title?

Certainly a poor neighbour to Edward Gray's fantastic art collection. Gray built up huge collections of fine art, antique books and rare plants. Both his art and plant collections became famous. On his death is art collection was described by art expert William Buchanan as "one of the finest small collections of pictures in the country". See one of my Wikipedia articles for more. I've also collected together in a virtual gallery, a very small part of the Harringay collection here on HoL.

Rubens for £30 ? Yeah right.

Looks like a puff to encourage people into his junk shop in the hope of finding a cheap Leonardo :)

...and by Mr W.H. Smith no less!

If a Rubens still a bargain at the modern equivalent of £90 - about £10,000 today!
