Searching HOL- Tips? How Can I Get More Relevant Results?

Can anyone shed light on how i can search HOL and get the most recent mentions of the topic i'm after?

I am just putting in the topic word only. The results come out in what appears to be a random date order - which means the information I want is often not relevant in pages of the search.

Can you filter the search results?

Usually, better results come from using Google to search just HoL: that's my first port of call. Use the box in left column home page, just under the green buttons.

Then you can use Google to refine by date. (I've checked - it works)

Sometimes, perversely, that native search finds what I want more easily, but a filtered Google search is my first choice.

What are you looking for? Sometimes tags work too.

I'm looking for results on Cockroaches. Ideally recent ones, rather than 2008! Thanks for the link, but if i put in cockroaches after: 2019 i get a result that says nothing available. (also same if i add month/day). How exactly would you do it Hugh? I put the search request in the Google for HOL box at the top right in my browser...?

You're probably doing it right. I've tried: there's nothing recent

Do you like reading about cockroaches or are you looking for a tradesman. If the latter, I can recommend David Parnell - see Google results on HoL for David at hgyol.in/2VhN1NM.

It's not a deep love at all..just my lodger says she's seen one in the house and i was wondering what others have experienced on the ladder. I don't like to post if there are loads already on the site.

Given there's nothing new, I think it wouldn't be uncivil to post a question. David Parnell is on the site and very happy to add comments. In fact if you look at his website, you might find the answer you're looking for. He's passionate about and expert at what he does.

Sparkle, if you're not specific as to which cockroaches have caught your interest, Google may refer you to Rwandan genocide circa 1992.

Thanks for asking this one Sparkle, I'm constantly frustrated but the search - looking for recommendations in the forum so often brings up ten year old results first which isn't helpful! Will try Hugh's suggestion next time as I always use the Google search in the top right of the website, which works differently!

Top right is native search. It's so-so, but not up to what we now expect. So I use the filtered Google on the left-hand side of the home page.

I think the forum software could do with an update - being able to sort results by date would be very useful (as would a mobile-friendly layout)

Completely agree and if I could snap my fingers and do it, many changes would have been made over the years.

Use of this platform isn't free however and the company are already trying to push me on to a newer version that doubles the cost and offers us no improvement.

The supposed benefit of using white-label software such as this is that I don't have to spend hours and hours each year, or more likely get someone else to, dealing with techie stuff.

I can think of a thousand ways HoL could be better. But since it's run for you for free, already costs me hundreds each year, I'm inclined to think it's good enough. But I'm always open to suggestions and donations!

I hear you - and really appreciate having the forum!

I, for one, wouldn't be averse to you accepting donations to cover running costs beyond what advertising provides.

If I had the time, I'd be happy to help with migration over to phpBB (which is free, bar hosting), but with my first child due in less than a month, and my first book deadline 3 months later, it might be unwise right now!
