Sending Parcel the Slow Way to USA - Any Tricks of the Trade?

I need to send a single weighty parcel to the States. The options seem to be air freight or complete household removal.  The items I'm shipping have sentimental value for the recipient but little intrinsic value. So far, the costs I'm turning up are two to three times the value of the items.

I've had enough fruitless searching on the web. So before I give up and pay what I consider to be over the odds, does anyone have any tricks of the trade as to how I might get surface shipping for single items at lower cost than air freight? It can take months. Speed is no issue.

I know there is a price comparison site for international shipping (including cheaper surface, not the usual expensive air courier suspects) but the person who has the details isn't contactable at the moment.  If I don't find it on my own, it'll be around 4 days before I can tell you.

Thanks Vaneska. I'd be grateful. I've noted your warning below.

p.s. you also need to be wary of sharks: some years ago a tenant of mine shipped some possessions here by sea from the US.  The scam of the company at this end was to pretend to attempt delivery, asserting that there was nobody at home to receive, and then charge for storage until the next assigned 'delivery date'.  He caught them out when they were stupid enough to try this trick a second time.  No doubt this scam works across the pond as well.

I get about £50 which seems pretty reasonable to me based on things I send to USA regularly (records and skateboards).

Yeah, that's what I was getting. What I'm sending is essentially scrap metal that has a sentimental value to the recipient. I'm baulking at forking out £50 to ship scrap metal. Guess I'll just have to grit my teeth and bite the bullet (although perhaps to avoid doing myself a real injury into the bargain, I'd be better off reversing the order of my idioms!).
