Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This week (17-23 June) is Refugee Week 2019. The organisers are inviting us all to do one of seven new (or revitalised!) Simple Acts, inspired by the theme ‘You, me or those who came before’.

Simple Acts are everyday actions we can all do to stand with refugees and make new connections in our communities.

1. Share a story

2. Find out who you really are

3. Share a dish

4. Feel the beat

5. Find one fact

6. Write a poem

7. Join the Movement

Apologies for the lateness in publishing this, but you still have time to get involved this week or any of the other 51 weeks in the coming year.

In the sprit of sharing a story, you might want to take a look at The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf (and illustrated by Pippa Curnick)

The book came out last summer and is already collecting accolades and prizes. It's won the Blue Peter Book Awards 2019 (Best Story category), the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2019 and has been shortlisted for both the Branford Boase Award 2019 and the Jhalak Prize 2019.

The Book Trust offers the following description:

This is the story about how one ordinary nine-year-old child and three classmates are full of empathy for Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria (he is the boy at the back of the class).

Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. There’s a lovely lack of stereotyping on gender and backstory for the narrator, which adds to the message of not judging people before you know them.

An inspiring and sweet tale that will help children think about what it is to be a good person whatever your circumstances (the narrator is from a poor background with a single parent mum who struggles to make ends meet), and challenge prejudice and push for fairness, whenever possible.

This is a beautiful, open-hearted debut from Onjali Q Raúf that should help children be the best they can be and realise the power of kindness.

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.
