Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Short film featuring the Wood Green Jazz Club circa 1954/55
Thought some Hol members might like to venture out to this
The ICA are showing a couple of films in October as part of the Story of London season.
One of these is a short film called Momma Don't Allow. The BFI site describes itthus:
Originally titled Jazz, it was about a Saturday evening at the Wood Green jazz club... [which was in a room at the back of the Fishmongers Arms at 287 High Road]
The film was shot on 16mm film during Winter 1954-5 with a total grant of just £425. By the time the it was completed in November 1955, its title had been changed to Momma Don't Allow...
The film captures the emerging 'youth culture' - a term unheard of before the 1950s - contrasting the relaxed, confident working-class Teddy Boys and their girlfriends with the more awkward 'toffs' whose arrival threatens to change the mood of the evening.
I wonder if any members here have their own memories, or tales to tell about the place?

thanks for the tip-off, dermot. sounds fascinating. a bit before my time but i've just googled the fishmongers arms to see where it was and notice that pink floyd played there in 1968. weirdly it also seems to have been the home of wood green freemasonry... http://woodgreen2426.co.uk/history.aspx best of all, django reinhardt is thought to have played at the fishmongers in 1938; there are recollections of the old venue and what became of it here http://www.paulvernonchester.com/1938UK-Tour.htm
