Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is it just me or is anyone else sick of the same thing:

I am sick of paying taxes only to see my roads covered in litter, bins overflowing, people speeding like mad down every road, people cycling on the pavements like no one cares, and cctv only being used to fine people who have parked incorrectly, rather than being used to do some good. I am also SICK of signs plastered everywhere, I wish they would just do the job and stop talking about it (or wasting money on signs).

They are also turning Wood Green high street into nothing but a string of betting shops and pound lands.

What I am most sick of is paying taxes only to see the woman 3 doors down from me, living on benefits and having her drug dealer visit every other day. Great use of council funds!

Who are they working for and who do they answer to?

Last week an elderly man (I don't know where he was from but this was not his country of origin) walked down my street picking up rubbish and pieces of broken glass from the pavement. He did this in a very relaxed and unostentatious way and I thanked him for doing this.

I'm not advocating everyone do this (though picking up the odd piece and putting it in the nearest bin is no hardship) but it makes a pleasant change from seeing people dropping litter as if it is their right, and lovely to exchange smiles with someone being quietly proactive.

I know others have said it - but it's really central government and not Haringey council that are responsible for people's benefits.

Yes, exactly this.

Just a word on being proactive; I live in an ex-local authority flat, Homes for Haringey are the freeholder. We have suffered from rubbish in communal grounds, abandoned 'large items' not being collected, recycled waste bags (full) left/thrown in garden, household rubbish thrown off balconies and dog waste not being collected. Each occasion I have contacted HfH and made a nuisance of myself until I get a response. And where necessary providing them with 'poo' pictures to illustrate the dog waste etc.

To their credit each item has been addressed, but it takes a lot of time and effort. HfH wrote to tenants/leaseholders regarding the waste and rubbish, they have resolved the dog waste  problem and the large items. My latest 'victory' was to get them to plant up barren areas of dirt which made the place look unloved. It seems at the moment to have had a positive effect; there has been less rubbish; maybe the caretaker has been prompted into being more proactive - |I understand these are things he should have been reporting.

Not saying that HfH is the same as the dealing with local council matters, but it kind of proves a point that you do have to be proactive in reporting issues/registering complaints. One caveat, I am not impressed with Veolia.

I can never get an answer out of HfH. Last Wednesday I got a letter from them warning of a potential injunction and action under my tenancy (I'm a leaseholder) if I didn't remove a metal gate over my door by Friday (it was removed over a year ago by their contractor). I called the tenancy officer who had written the letter, Denis somebody, to be told no one called Denis works there, did I mean Denise? They said Denise would be in the estate around 11am, of course I was at work so that was no good. I left my number but she never called. So I emailed the home ownership team. This was last Thursday. Still waiting for a reply. In the meantime I've had the grille over my kitchen window removed because my neighbour had men over to remove his gate so I piggy backed on that. Yet I'm still awaiting clarification as to whether that's what their letter meant. I mean, if you can't even get your own name right in a letter and mix up doors/windows, tenants/leaseholders it's not going to fill the recipient with confidence. Also giving people one working day (on which they will likely be working) to carry out work to their property?

And now I can't dry laundry in the kitchen with the window open.
Completely agree the litter and waste collections are awful! Horrified people use any opportunity to blame refugees for everything! Sophia thread hijacked by idiots with opportunity to refugee bash! It would be nice if we people could not drop litter, consider their recycling and not overflow bins and generally be a little kinder to one another and our surrounding.
