Alan (AKA "Ski-slopes Stanton"), I think you can be forgiven for attempting humour and avoiding direct comment!

The Stroud Green Residents Association has recieved an unambigious statement from the Conservative Party on this issue. The position of the Liberal Democrat Party is well known.

The lack of a statement by the Labour Party (LP) is understandable and IMO, forgivable, due to the uncertainty of BC outcome.

If the LP and/or the incumbent MP for Tottenham made any public statement on the matter, it would simply be offering a hostage to fortune. They would be in the invidious position of having two chances out of four of getting it wrong:

If the LP opposed the BC, that might appear a little unseemly, but if it failed to go ahead, that would be a no change and no new problem.

If the LP supported the BC and the BC went ahead (even if the Tottenham MP has his hands full with the well-known problems of Tottenham), the damage is limited. But consider this:

If the LP supported the BC, and it doesn't go ahead, that might prove embarrassing.

If the LP opposed the BC, but BC nevertheless went ahead, that would be embarrassing, as the Tottenham MP would nonetheless be obliged to represent Stroud Green Ward when that Ward knew that the MP hadn't wanted them!

These difficulties would apply to any Ward adjacent to any Parliamentary Constituency that is a "safe seat", where that Ward is mooted as an addition.

The constituency of Tottenham is a "safe" seat (for the LP) and Stroud Green resident's votes – whichever way they were cast – would be able to make much less difference in Tottenham than in Hornsey & Wood Green. This is a function of course of the first-past-the-post system and perhaps another argument for proportional representation.

The Green Party has relatively strong support in Stroud Green Ward, but their position on BC is still unknown: there's still time for a statement from the Greens before the Boundary Commission's Public Consultation ends.

-

Residents of Harringay Ward have their own reasons to be concerned about the proposed boundary changes. They relate to the calving off of Seven Sisters Ward and possible implications for the resolution of the Arena Shopping Centre traffic management issue.

Who is "us"?

We're all entitled to our opinions, but there does seem to be a contradiction here in the "doubt" and the mention of "us". The post has attracted more than 1,200 views in five days, which makes it one of the more popular.

Now, either (a) there's an awful lot of "us" in Harringay Ward who are interested in the subject, or (b) "us" who live in Harringay don't care too hoots,…

Now, either (a) there's an awful lot of "us" in Harringay Ward who are interested in the subject, or (b) "us" who live in Harringay don't care too hoots, haven't looked, and those 1,200 views are mainly from users outside the Ward of Harringay.

Which reflects that fact that community websites don't respect legal borders. I think part of the reason for that is the confusion by many users of the site, between "Haringey" and "Harringay". At least they got the spelling right on our new library sign!

In this context, "us" sounds a bit tribal to me and what I think you really mean is, not Harringayonline, but like-minded people who don't care two hoots. I don't agree with GN8 that the comments throughout the thread are (more) offensive. I think you can get interest and disinterest both within and without Harringay Ward.

I suspect the level of interest shown is less to do with the particular Boundary Commission proposal (nor that Tottenham's MP happens to live in Stroud Green) but that it touches on the Borough's party political front-line and the backdrop to municipal policies.

To be honest, I don't care two hoots whether Stroud Green becomes part of our constituency or not, and I doubt many of us do. I just thought it was a bit cheeky to post this on a site that is mainly used by people who live in Harringay. You may not have meant to offend, but it was not very well-considered, as the response has shown.

Hugh, I think you need to make it clearer that it just shows streets with members, it's not a "Member map". Otherwise unscrupulous people like GN8 will use it as they have.

I like the dynamism it brings... And somehow I think people respond to it being natural and expressive. However from an editing point of view it is a nightmare, so I can see where a convention not to do it can stem from.
