Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Actually it's in the walls - eek! Hoping I can get some advice or recommendations of reliable & effective tradespeople to fix dat rat and stop any of it's ratty friends getting in.

It's not the first time this has happened. I've a garden flat with undeveloped basement on the Ladder. Normally a couple of well placed traps in the basement solves the problem, but this rat seems to be staying hidden. The only time I know it's still there is when I hear it scrabbling in a partition wall. I could remove the bath panel and put down poison but I want to avoid a dead rat somewhere I can't access, and want to avoid it getting into any of the rooms.

I also need to stop it's friends getting in. All the obvious external access points have been blocked up. I'm thinking of getting a drain survey done in case they're coming in via a broken pipe - can you recommend someone? Is there anything else I can do to secure the house? Can pest control help, or do they just state the obvious?

It's an age old problem so hoping some HOLers can share their advice. No, I don't want to get a cat! On a positive note, the occasional late night cockroaches seem to have disappeared!!

Thanks
Lisa

We have a constant problem with mice that has recently morphed into a problem with rats. The poo was the clue. I put a massive rat trap down and have caught 2 up to Monday when I caught my third. Sadly it was still alive and caught in the trap. I was going to drown the thing if I could get hold of it but it eventually managed to get out and made a break for it, even with obvious injuries. I eventually to get it out and into the back garden where I had to club the thing to death. Possibly the most revolting thing I have ever had to do! Made me sick to the core.

I have plugged the hole they were using to get into the cupboard, but there is still the problem of how they are getting into the house in the first place.

Deep Joy!

There is definitely a lot of rat action at the moment. Like the original poster, our rat is no more but is most definitely dead because our house stinks to high heaven. It's revolting. We can't work out where it is and wonder whether it somehow got trapped somewhere and then couldn't get out.

I also found a dead rat on the pavement of Seymour Road by the passage this morning. Lovely start to the day that was ...

Is there a lot of activity at the moment because they are trying to find places to hang out in the winter??

Check the drains, that is where it probably came from.   If they get into the cellar or roof, your neighbours will get them too.
