Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just to let everyone know that the council are proposing new tree planting along the Ladder roads.  This is scheduled to start on Monday 24th March. There should be in the region of 76 new trees across the Ladder.

This is great news as some of our trees where lost to disease last year - it is great to have confirmation that more trees are now being planted.

(OK, the photo is of one of my trees but its the best photo of a tree I have!)

Nick G-T just posted a reminder to water the new trees given we have had 2 days with no rain...

It occurred to me that I often look after some trees local to me on Pemberton, but it had not occurred to me until Nick mentioned it that they might need a bit of something in the next day or two. So I thought it might be worth trying to see if we can identify the new trees (and in fact any other trees that look vunerable that might not be recently added) and see if we can find a couple of folks near to each tree willing to 'adopt' the tree.

I suspect (as with may things) it will not occur to us or the folks outside whose house the tree sits to take some responsibility for it, but I am sure most of us would do so if reminded. So, with that three things:

  1. Are there any trees not on this list that you think are young or venerable that we should add to a 'watch list'
  2. Are you willing to look after and 'adopt' any of the vulnerable trees or the newly added trees that Hugh posted the locations of in a spread sheet here? If so, let me know and I will make a note on the spread sheet
  3. Would you be willing to knock on a few doors on your street of neighbours close to the new/vulnerable trees to see if they would 'adopt' the tree? Again, if so please let me know and I will talk with you separately

Justin, as I mentioned in my thread you have linked to, I am happy to organise with neighbours the watering of the new trees in Falkland Road.

I'll have a think about it, but trees that were planted adhoc last year were on Wightman Road outside the Station Mansions, which John D was watering (though it looked poorly the last time I saw it). There are also two cherry trees at the Wightman end of Lausanne Road, though these were privately sponsored so hopefully someone is caring for these.

Happy to do some door knocking close to the homes with new trees - getting some leaflets from the Haringey Tree Wardens would be ideal or we could easily print some off from the internet.

OK, I'll take on the two on Umfreville Rd - I've given them a bucket of water already.

Cool, thanks Gordon. I will message you and if you are ok with it I will get your email address so I can try to remember to remind folks when the weather is hot and dry. I now I forget and it was only Nick's message that prompted me too.

From what I can see Gordon there are 5 on Umfrevrille, which two are you happy to adopt?

OS 1/1A (Odsey Villas) Umfreville Road
BT 1/3 Umfreville Road
BT 41/43 Umfreville Road
BT 71/73 Umfreville Road
BT 72/74 Umfreville Road

Also, any chance you might knock on a couple of doors near the other trees and see if the folks close to other new trees might be ok watering them? No worries if not.

Hmm, sorry Justin, tunnel vision when reading the spreadsheet I think.

I'll do the three nearest me: 72/74, 71/73 (Alnus showing stress) and I'll add 41/43. Hopefully someone else will pick up the two others at the top of the road.

Good stuff.

Nick. I have dropped Chris Setz a line (He is one of the Haringey Tree Wardens). I will see if he has any thoughts and leaflets we can use.

Let me know which trees you are ok covering and how you get on with neighbours pitching in, you are right 11 is a lot.

I will drop John D a line and see if he has his eye on the one outside Station Mansions and I will check out the Lausanne cherries next time I am up there.

OK, I've done a bit of watering today. Puzzled though - there has been quite a lot of rain over the past few days.

I'm a bit miffed - when the Council advised that they were going to plant a tree right outside the entrance to the flats I objected and told them it was a stupid place. They said it was OK, but when the bin men drag the huge recycling bin out to the street they now have to manoeuvre it round the tree and they damage the brickwork of the low wall. I guess we'll have to make the entrance wider.

Good, glad you have that one covered John.

I saw this and thought of this group- The effect of lightening on trees. Ouch!
