Clearly, there was a little hysteria about. Just a few weeks later on 14 November, the Morning Post carried the following:

My first thought on seeing this was a strange coincidence with the Yorkshire Ripper. There was a tape sent to the Police by a highly plausible man claiming to be this latter day Ripper. I'm pretty sure he came from Sunderland and he wasted an awful lot of time and probably led to further murders because the Police seemed convinced he was genuine. He was eventually caught and jailed I recall.
