Why the new trains aren't running on the Great Northern line yet, and just sitting in the sidings - Harringay online2024-03-29T15:47:36Zhttps://harringayonline.com/forum/topics/why-the-new-trains-aren-t-running-on-the-great-northern-line-yet?commentId=844301%3AComment%3A1155152&x=1&feed=yes&xn_auth=noGosh, it's made me a bit sad…tag:harringayonline.com,2019-04-09:844301:Comment:11599092019-04-09T13:35:57.531ZStraw Cathttps://harringayonline.com/profile/StrawCat

I remember the 313s when they were new into service in 1976. They embody the British Rail staidness of style, typical of that period. Yesterday's funeral of 313 026 was followed all the way to the graveyard in Newport by enthusiasts and cameras, worthy of a royal funeral.
Ironically, 313 026's cortege was pulled by an even older 1960's built Class 57 (47) locomotive.
Of course, there is also a video.

Caught one from Hornsey to Crews Hill on Friday. Clean, spacious, didn’t rock and roll and remarkable quiet. Found the seats fine but I may have more personal upholstery. Can’t wait for them all to come into service.

Unfortunately (or fortunately if you remain cynical about the 717 reliability), GN’s franchise agreement includes a four week “cool off” period where they are obliged to retain outgoing units in storage, so the geriatrics will be around for a bit longer - especially as they’re expecting only a quarter in by end of April.

But where will they put them!? Hornsey is already bursting at the seams - so expect to see some 313s in some odd locations around the network...

It sounds like it’s finally happening at least. The solution will eventually see signals moved (probably in height rather than location) - but for now, they’re putting a secondman in the cabs between Finsbury Park and Moorgate. So much for a modern railway - they’ve reintroduced a concept as old as the railway itself.

0532 Hornsey depot to Finsbury Park (pl 1) will set up the 0541 service down the tunnels. Another unit will join this one and then it’ll be 2 a week, apparently.
There are rumours that they a…tag:harringayonline.com,2019-03-24:844301:Comment:11570532019-03-24T17:43:30.590ZStraw Cathttps://harringayonline.com/profile/StrawCat
