Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I could be being totally paranoid here, but after reading all the scam posts that crop up here I was made to feel a bit uncomfortable by a guy who called on us at about 10am this morning. He was a window cleaner touting for business, and asked me if we wanted any of ours cleaning; he could do it today.

I was initially quite keen because (leading to my next question!) I have been trying to find a good window cleaning service in the area for a few weeks now spring has tentatively sprung and I still can't reach the tops of our Edwardian sash windows. But when I asked him for a quote he got really funny with me, saying "I can't quote for you unless I come into your house because I don't know how many windows you have".

When I pointed out that there were precisely six of them, and that they were the same size as the three he could see he started to recount storied of being lied to by would-be customers who then turn out to have twice as many. So he would not quote for me unless I let him in. Which set alarm bells ringing with me and I sent him packing. Have I been unreasonable here or was his insistence on coming in to the property out of order? I could see where he was coming from, but it did not fill me with confidence.

Oh, and does anyone have a window cleaner who's any good? ;)

thanks!

Abi, it sounds really dodgy, and you did the right thing. Don't ever let anyone in if you're not feeling comfortable. Can you please contact the Safer neighbourhoods team about this guy? A description would also be handy. For them as well as for other HoL members. Which road are you on?

And I don't know a good window cleaner, sorry. Am looking for one myself.

This was in South Tottenham Osbawn...should I be releasing the hounds? ;)

There are a couple of blokes who come round and do our windows in South Tottenham about once a month. Carl and his brother. They're very nice and I would say trustworthy, but this doesn't sound like him. What road do you live on? I'll tell them to try your road next time I see him.

<Edit> I just looked at the Clean Touch website below and that looks like them. They're good, give them a call

Abi, to save you from a fate worse than paranoia, try Anthony [of Antwhywindows] on 07958551315. He's done mine for quite a while, every two months, and I'm happy with him. He's had a few other recommendations on this site.

Alternatively, look for 'window cleaner' in the  discussions forum. It's one of HOL's perennial preoccupations, surpassed only by cats gone AWOL and new eating places in Crouch End.

You've been looking for weeks? Have you tried all the recommendations here on HoL vis the Tradespeople group? I know of at least one who would be glad of the work, the guy who's done mine for the past gawd knows how many years.

I'd say dodgy. Anyone who does work on the outside and asks to come inside should be given the brush off immediately .

Btw, has anyone bought fish from that guy with a white van that rings your door bell on Fridays?
