Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Woman going through our recycling bin
Seen today on Seymour Road outside our house. Woman, late 20s, average height, with dyed blonde hair dark at the roots done up on top of her head, dressed casually. She walked into our front garden and had a look through our bins, then left. She made off down the road towards Green Lanes quite quickly.
It may be linked with the fact that my purse and phone were stolen from my bag on the bus earlier this week and she may have been looking for further ID; on the other hand, she may have just been opportunistic.
Be careful what you put In your bins and watch out for distraction thieves, particularly on crowded buses.

So sorry you had your bag stolen. We get woman and men nearly everyday looking in our bins . They are looking for anything they can use or sell..

Presumably, if you have put something in your bin it's because you don't wan it anymore. Surely you don't mind if someone else can find a use for it? Sorry you got robbed on the bus by the way.

Would you really begrudge someone using something you've finished with? Seems to me it's recycling in its purist form and I'm all for that. I'm always delighted when I put something unwanted outside and I see a someone walking away with it.

Actually Gillian it is illegal for anyone to remove anything in your garden without your consent as it is theft. I don’t mind people taking generally but I found they go through the bin, throw everything on the floor and take what they want without putting back what they don’t want. This causes litter and left to me to clean up. Another danger when someone stole my plant pots and flowers no neighbour took any notice because people living here were used to these people going in someone’s front garden and taking things so they assumed it was rubbish they were taking. If you have anything useable take it to a charity shop as these help more needed and genuine people

A lot of people going from garden to garden, bin to bin, aren't looking for scrap or cans etc to recycle. They're looking for any paperwork they can find that might have personal details on, then they can try to steal ID etc. It's always best to shred or tear your paperwork to shreds and make sure no names or reference numbers etc can't be detected. It can mean a little extra thought and time put into scrapping your paperwork but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Where I used to live in Tottenham we had women walking into gardens and rummaging through recycling bins. They were looking for names, ID, bank statements, other documents with any of your details on and these would then be used try to access your accounts etc. NEVER leave any personal details in your recycling bins. Shred everything that may have such details on and mix them up with other items in the bin so they can't be retrieved and pieced together again to rip you off. You can never be too safe.

Exactly what I was concerned about, Barney, particularly after being pickpocketed. Unfortunately my driving licence - with my address on it, of course, had been in my purse when it was stolen, hence my suspicion when the woman rocked up to go through our bin. Thankfully nothing sensitive goes into our bins so she was out of luck.
It’s not the first time we’ve had people going through our bins and some of them just tip the lot out and leave it there.
If I have things I no longer want that can be reused they go on the wall with a message to take them so they don’t have to come into the garden.
