The Royal provided me and my pals plenty of fun during the 50s and into the 60s. Resident band was I recall Ray McVay but the Dave Clark Five played there (Mike Smith was a pal).

There was a famously huge fight there one Saturday night. Me and a couple of mates crept under the tables to the nearest fire escape, slammed the bar and emerged at knee height to confront several very large pairs of black boots on the end of coppers' legs. "On yer way lads" we heard as they pounded in to join the affray.

And the coppers did join in in those days !!!

You missed a great era Paul C......... bands up close and personal in small pubs/clubs.  Brilliant.
