Of note, the coloured cross on the front of the tram to enable the illiterate to distinguish differing routes.

No it was Spouters Corner. People (men mostly i believe) used to stand on soap boxes and spout (like at Hyde Park Corner) on whatever subject took their fancy. some of my mum's family remembered seeing/hearing them.

The sign is for the Nags Head Pub opposite. The building extreme right is the Funeral Directors & to the right of that (out of site) is the blacksmiths. Lordship Lane runs off to the right between the three story parade of shops & the Funeral Directors. The men building behind the tram are working on new Public Toilets in preparation for the underground. Ladies at street level, Gents below ground.

John, While the men certainly are working on the public toilets. No thought had been given at the time of this photo (pre-1913**) to an underground station at this location. The first plans for an extension of the Piccadilly Line north of Finsbury Park were for a line under Great Northern main line to Wood Green, what is now Alexandra Park Station. Planning for the eventual extension to Cockfosters didn't begin in earnest until the late 1920s.  **Tram routes were given route numbers in 1913.
