Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Can anyone tell me what this carnival/procession is in aid of? It takes place in 1964 and I believe it's Green Lanes, Harringay.
Any info will be gratefully received!

That's a gem Louise. It looks like a street carnival in the tradition of the 20th century street carnivals. It's not clear if this was a Harringay one or a Harringay and Wood Green one. The only surviving carnival in the area that I'm aware of is the Hornsey Carnival. Looking distinctly dated, it still processes through Hornsey and Crouch End each summer. I videoed a few minutes of it a few years back. It could even have been the Hornsey Carnival in your 1964(?) footage. They may be able to help you if you contact them.
And what's the Southend-on-Sea connection? I saw this film at the showing at Bruce Castle last week and the Kursaal Flyer locomotive float reminded me that a few years back I happened on the Hornsey carnival in Crouch End, which bizarrely had floats from Southend. The Southend carnival queen again makes an appearance in Hugh's film, which I'm pretty sure was a different year.
I had assumed that the appearance of the Southend folk was simply a matter of those in a fading tradition supporting one another. Perhaps there's more to it. I guess a question to the Hornsey Carnival organisation would find that out.
Thank you both for your comments!
It is indeed a tradition for carnivals to take part in each others' carnivals. I'll ping an email to Hornsey...
I bet if you speak to Shefik or Rob at Harringay Traders, between them them could dredge up enough memories to help you out, Pav.
Coming soon Simon! Coming soon!!!
