Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I saw this a few moments ago, discussion of introducing a new close pass law to fine drivers £100 if they do not give cyclists sufficient room when passing. I was amazed by how many people are hurt on bikes each year, and these are just the ones that get reported, how many close calls are there as well:

"Recent figures released by the Department for Transport showed there were 18,450 pedal cyclist casualties in the year ending September 2017, of which 3,750 (20 per cent) were killed or seriously injured. Around 100 cyclists are killed in the UK every year"

I guess the key to this and its success will be the video camera evidence we can all conjure up after a close call.

This does seem very sensible. It is difficult to see that anyone could reasonably object to this. 

I like to think it is preparation for a "no overtaking" in cities. That would make cycling a MUCH more attractive proposition. I pride myself on always catching up with and sitting in front of at the next red light, any vehicle that overtakes me just to make the point. There is no way you get to Liverpool Street from Harringay quicker than on a bicycle unless you're speeding on a motorbike and illegally using the ASAs.

Well that explains a lot of previous posts about interactions with drivers.

I think you need to explain that. The ASA is for sitting in front of traffic. I'm very fast so they need to exceed the speed limit to overtake me in the first place. If you think that they're allowed to feel more entitled to the road than me then I think you need a refresher on the laws of the road in this country.

And you've just added another post to the load of such previous posts.  "they need to exceed the speed limit to overtake me" . It would look to me as a car driver OR as a cyclist like passive-aggressive virtue signalling if I witnessed what you described in your previous post referring to 'no-overtaking in cities', since you invited an explanation. Nothing personal.

And if you read the post on the first page, I've cycled in London for 30 years, well before there were ASAs (which I approve of). Finally, I'm very obviously not asserting entitlement by other road users. 

No, I'm not addressing his speed and your points are well taken - it's the use of 'pride myself', sitting in front of', 'make the point', that look confrontational.

I understand it's a little confrontational (think David v Goliath though), but I am doing this for all cyclists, including the people sitting behind me in the car who are "not yet cyclists". For what it's worth, I am not making eye contact with these people, which I would see as pretty confrontational.

If you want confrontational, see the hard time I give moped riders who storm into the ASA. You'd be surprised how ashamed even the most hardy look when you point out that their exhaust pipe is closer to your mouth than theirs.

And how confrontational was your discussion in " Last night I was chased by a motorcyclist down Worship Street " ?

There wasn't time for a confrontation. I can't remember, but I suppose I may have blown my horn out of fright.

John M's certainly blowing his.....

E-bikes will make a big difference. The average speed for a motorist inside the north circular is (according to O'Donovan's skips) anywhere between 9 and 12 mph. There are lots of other stats if you google. I really don't see this as a problem.
