Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm used to thinking of the name Harringay only having been used to describe our area sicnce the late 19th century. So I was surprised to come across this advert in the Standard almost 180 years ago (13 March 1840).

It's hardly conclusive, but it's interesting.

And if Messrs Hoggart, Poole & Gamlen had agreed to wait a month, you could have had all details of these valuable plots much more cheaply by enclosing a pre-paid envelope with a new adhesive Penny Black stamp affixed.

There was a Harringay House I believe- how old was that?

Yes, and there’s no doubt that having adopted the name, it bequeathed it to the area, but the above is about the first time “Harringay” was used to refer to the area as a neighbourhood.

Point. Tx.
