Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

To all that knew PC Glyn Kelly, it is with sadness I share this news.

Glyn sadly passed away yesterday morning in his home in Newcastle after losing the battle with cancer.

Glyn retired from the force in February 2018 after 31 years as a beat officer and dedicated ward officer on Harringay ward. He was well known in the community and loved by many.

I worked with Glyn for the past 14 years on the Harringay ward (the ladder).

Patrolling side by side, we were together for 8-10 hours a day. A bit like a part time couple. Through thick and thin he was there for me and I was there for him. He was a loyal, caring, loving and a very special person. To everyone that knew him, you know what I’m talking about. He had a sense of humour and knew some funny jokes and always called me kid (that was my nickname) and that's what I will miss most. We kept in touch when he retired until the last day.

I will miss you Glyn but I have the treasured memories of us together walking the beat. Every corner I turn, you can be sure there is a memory.

I know you will be looking down from above and saying keep it up kid.

Rest in peace Glyn Kelly.

This is very sad.

I only knew him as a resident, but he was always a friendly welcome face. Having the same person as a police office for so long took us back to the days of Dixon of Dock Green, He was one of the last true neighbourhood bobbies in London.

Vaya con Dios, Glyn.

Glyn was one of the people who was instrumental in helping to get an active neighbourhood watch going on our street some decades ago when crime was a massive problem.  Always approachable, always positive and always helpful.  He even managed to put to one side that he was from Newcastle and I’m from Sunderland! A really caring person and very sadly missed.

Rest in peace, Glyn. Sad news indeed.

This site was set up as a community site. If I think of one individual embodying that word community for Harringay it is Glyn. Caring, genuine, a people person, considered but helpful advice ... and always a sense humour. It's all there in the photo above. x

Very sad news. Condolences to friends and family and may he rest in peace.

A real Gentleman. I only met him a few times but he was a lovely fella, A sad loss.

So very sorry to hear this sad news.  Glyn served Harringay ward tirelessly for so many years, he was such a familiar face to see and he made this little part of north London feel that much safer for me. As Hugh said he was a traditional local neighbourhood bobby in the true sense of the word.

I am very sorry to hear this sad news. I came across Glyn on a number of occasions over the years - he was always helpful, supportive and professional. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues - especially L.

My favourite photo of Glyn

@ Michael ... Glyn loved this idea when I asked if he'd be interested in taking part. Even swapped a work day and attended the ufo crash site on his day off!! Said it was one of his best days serving our ward. He loved community events.

He sent the aliens on their way after tea & biscuits were served and stories about galaxies far far away :)

I think discussions are shortly to begin about a memorial to Glyn. My first thought was whether this incident could play a role in the design of that. It speaks rather eloquently of his community involvement.

Whilst commenting, I'll just add that I've just remembered that for the first few years of HoL (before he was yanked away by the powers that be), this old-fashioned Geordie was one of the first coppers in the UK to get the utility of social media for policing. He used in a very human and personal way responding to concerns raised an dgiving info as fully and speedily as he was able - a very different pattern to today.

So keen was Glyn to be involved, that he set up a personal account, under a thinly disguised pseudonym, for use off-duty.

I’ll just add my voice  to the positive memories of Glyn   When we set a Neighbourhood Watch In Raleigh Road in pre-social media days Glyn was there and very helpful.  A lovely guy.
