Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

Couldn't find this topic by searching so I'm hoping it hasn't already been discussed :)

Compost bins: If you've placed yours in the garden - as opposed to on the patio or on tiling - do you have a base plate under it?

I haven't, in the interests of encouraging free movement of worms between the soil and the bin, but I'm just curious if others living in the Ladder or the Gardens have had many issues with pests or vermin.

So far the foxes appear to have ignored it completely and aren't trying to burrow into it or any such.

Have you had any issues with rodents? I don't think we have any rats around thanks to the foxes and cats, but still...

Thanks

Mine is directly in the ground and I haven’t had any issues with vermin ( in 6 years)I don’t put anything other than green or brown waste in though - cooked food waste goes in the food waste bin.

This is my experience too, directly on the soil, with no problems from rodents or foxes ( though I know that they do visit the garden) and I'm careful to only put garden waste, veg peelings and a bit of brown cardboard.

Thank you Julie and Maggie, that ties in with my assumptions...

I have mine on bare soil and have put bricks around the base as well to stop any digging.
Never had any problems.
I turn the compost over occasionally with a big fork. Always lots of worms in there.

In summer check if it’s looking a bit dry and if so add some water. The worms will love you for that. ♥️

I've got mine on a couple of spare paving slabs. The worms etc. can get through the gaps, and the slabs make emptying the bin just that little bit easier.
