Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Sad to see Disneys finally close down. It's a lovely old shop front and wondered if anyone knows who's going to move in and ruin it in true Harringay style?

Depends who is willing to put their hand in their pocket really Caspar.

Or even shops totally unconnected to food ?

The council rates on Green Lanes shops are higher than Upper Streets. I guess you have to have one hell of a business plan or a hell of a lot of money behind you to open something new.

The area would be best served if it was a satellite dish store.

What are people going to do with only 698 channels?

I walked along Chatsworth Road yesterday and was taken by how very different the range of businesses is to Green Lanes. The demographics in the surrounding area are I think similar to ours, but the selection of shops is completely different. My guess is that the history of the last 50 years plays a role in that but I wonder if it's the rent levels on Green Lanes that prevent the same selection of independent small businesses opening here.

Yes, the businesses here seem like those more guaranteed for higher turnover. On Chatsworth they seem to me like more speculative ventures that people who live there feel might be popular with people who live there.

Delighted to hear that Savers are moving in. Any of you wishing to spend your money at Superdrug or any of the three chemists/pharmacies are still free to do just that.

Not by lovely old shop fronts alone doth Harringay man or woman live - especially when Disney's old shop front is less than 25 years old. Can all the anti-Savers-Save-our-pseudo-Heritage brigade own up and tell us whether they have spent £1,000 or even £100 at Disneys in the past 25 years?  If not, spare us your bellyaching about what ruins Harringay. Meanwhile, a look at Hugh's main thread on this topic tells us that Savers are being tied to treating this faux-Edwardian shop front with some respect.

I bought a mattress in there about three years ago. Do i have your permission to discuss the matter now?

In fact I do agree. Disney's stuff was just about OK, a step up from the Cots&Beds stock further along the parade. And their showroom presentation didn't even begin to do some justice to what they had on offer. Their 2013 centenary year was a chance for them to up their game a little, but they were probably already in wind-down mode by then.

I think Richard's 3-year old mattress may allow him to bellyache, or at least backache.
