Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The informal decorating of trees with empty beer cans seems to have become the norm along the New River Path. Is it just beery mindlessness or is there some other story behind it?

Judging by the brands, maybe some kind of eastern european tradition?
For reasons that might reward investigation there is not a single litter bin along the New River Path between Hampden Road and Wightman Road. Some walkers and/or picnickers take their rubbish away but some clearly don't. I once asked Haringey Council whether litter bins could provided at each entrance gate but response came there none. Dog waste bins did however appear. It would seem that some people are sensitive enough to hang their refuse on trees or fences which may in some strange way mean that it is not litter. Other, perhaps less sensitive types, put it in a plastic bag and sling it over my garden fence.
I still think a few bins along the way would lead to better behaviour.
After the litter pick up a few months back I also asked about providing litter bins but got no response too. I wonder if it's because the land is owned by Thames Water rather than Haringey that makes them reluctant to take responsibility for the rubbish?
Rather than the council get on to veolia. Ask a site manager to review and they will then instruct the council to install bins if they feel there is a need. Good luck!

Veolia have had their contract with the council cut by 3 million pounds this year, so I would not place too much hope on them providing more than the most basic service from now on...

The New River is the responsibility of Thames Water, not Veolia or the Council.

I rather like the beer can trees. Anywhere else it would be an artistic installation

What happened to Haringey, they used to do Hackney's rubbish once
Absolutely, there are bins at each end, but one or two would be warented in between, is it a land ownership issue?

I don't know about the Hamden Road end but at the Wightman Road end there is no litter bin, only a dog poo bin.

The 'beer can trees' is a actually a missing line from the American folk song 'Big Rock Candy Mountain'. The genus of the tree is easteuropeanus beercanicus and sprouts beer cans as its fruit, sadly someone got there first and drank the contents.

I have a coke can garden.
