Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission Propose New Planning Framework

In January, the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission released its report proposing a new development and planning framework with a focus on aesthetic considerations.

The Commission is an independent body that advises government on how to promote and increase the use of high-quality design for new build homes and neighbourhoods.

Set up in November 2018, the commission's aim was to investigate how millions of homes can be built in England without compromising on quality and aesthetics.

The final report from the Commission sets out over 100 policy recommendations for the government and planning bodies. They include urban orchards and incentivising developers by fast-tracking planning for attractive housing.

Architects have broadly welcomed the report, despite early fears that the involvement of controversial right-wing philospopher, Roger Scruton would result in a neo-Georgian whitewash.

RIBA praised its “withering assessment of public-sector procurement practices” and the condemnation of permitted development rights which he said were resulting in tomorrow’s slums.

This, after the Bonfire of the Quangos that included CABE: The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which passed perhaps one too many poor reviews of Tory backing property developers' new slums and rabbit hutches.
