Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Guest speaker Mary Southcott from the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform (LCER) will be at the next meeting of MVM North London on Tuesday 9th April.

She will be well known to many local people as a political activist and as associated with the Friends of Cyprus.

Mary has been a Labour parliamentary candidate, has held a variety of roles in the party and has spoken at a large number of local Labour Parties on electoral reform. She was also a guest panellist at Make Votes Matter’s fringe event at the last Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

Mary will be speaking on the Labour Party & its relationship with Parliamentary Reform.

As there seems to be no end to the bickering & backbiting in our Parliament it would seem to be a good idea to give some leadership to our politicians.

They do not seem to understand or listen to genuine grievances or discontent unless shocked into it.

As with the Euro-vote it would seem necessary that this should come from the bottom up.
This one could well get a greater support from the public than the Euro-vote.

Corbyn won’t be in the same room as Chukka Ummana for whatever reason and now the Conservatives are getting apoplectic about the Prime Minister talking to the Leader of the Opposition.

Such Statesmanship!

The whole Democratic System needs to be shaken up.

On we go with our politicians refusing to accept one of the most prominent positive aspects of Europe. The Voting Systems.

All but two countries in Europe use a form of PR. Also used as we know by the upcoming (believe it, the candidates have been chosen & have been in place for some time) European Elections. Strange how so many of our politicians wishing to remain in Europe with all its many apparent advantages refuse to accept its Democratic system.

This attitude has got to stop, it is making a laughing stock of us.

MVM is a genuinely non-party political movement. We believe everybody is entitled to be heard.

The MVM Alliance, which meets in Westminster every quarter is made up of politicians and interested parties, Compass, The ERS, 50:50 Parliament, Conservative Action for Electoral Reform, LCER, LGA Independent Group and many others of all views.

The Make Votes Matter Declaration; Agreed by the Alliance lays out the Guidelines for a P.R. System. Fair representation for minorities; Seats to match votes cast; Equal representation for women etc.

There is a new petition on the Westminster Petition Site. After 10,000 signatures it elicts a Government Response. After 100,000 it is put forward for a Westminster Hall Debate.

An MVM sponsored Petition in 2017 resulted in a very well attended debate in October of that Year.

It is time for another one, after all, we have learnt so much more about the way our governance works since then.

We are on our way.

You are welcome to come to this and all our meetings, participate, then go home & if you wish, sign the Petition.

It is open to all and will be of interest to everyone with an interest in Society's welfare.
