Shortly before 5:30 this afternoon a fire started in the garage on Wightman Road, just opposite Effingham Road. As the story unfolded on Twitter, Tom Cox (@coxytom) sent us the picture above, and others soon followed - added below.

@Neightgreen tells us that no one has been hurt.

Its much worse than that now - entire building ablaze, sadly, and thick toxic smoke belching out. It's a goner I'm afraid.

"It's still massive, 4 fire engines outside. (am in the flat opposite)"

Excellent! Now the owner can build a lot of really tiny flats.

Oh you cynic! Unfortunately, that's exactly what I was thinking, esp if they get good insurance pay out..

Wouldn't they need PLANNING PERSMISSION?

Given the history of this building as a municipal facility, I was half wondering if it might be council owned. (I've checked on the planning website - nothing comes up).

Whoever the owner is, the community is now in a position to seek to bid for any property it considers important

I have just been down talking to the owners this morning - they are gutted, devastated and very emotional - I felt like crying just seeing them so upset as they surveyed the remains of their business. So flats are the last thing this will become!

The building does belong to the council but part of it will have to be demolished as it is unstable and these guys are wondering how on earth they can carry on their business with no premises.

Lets hope the council and local community can rally round in their hour of need.

Did you find out how the fire started, Karen?

Yes, apparently the mechanics where working on a car and it caught fire.  The guys managed to escape out of the side of the building and nobody was hurt fortunately.
