Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

anyone know how to complain about Veolia?  Looking at their website the only way is to 'contact us' which takes you to report dumping etc.  Haringey's website does the same.  Or am I missing something?

I really think Veolia is providing a poor service.  One of their directors was quoted in the Journal last year saying that dog mess would be cleaned with 6 hours of it being reported: http://bit.ly/p1v3X1

Does anyone have any record of this actually happening?  My experience is that after making a report, you need to phone up two or three days later to ask for it to be cleaned up.

Speaking to one of their operators last week (on the third attempt, after holding for 5 mins each time) I was told that there is a problem with Haringey passing on reports to Veolia - which means there is an extra delay in getting dog mess cleaned or dumped rubbish lifted.

Veolia also often leave their purple bags on corners.  If the van that collects these bags misses one, they don't get moved until the next clean - which could be 5 or 6 days.  And that means more rubbish accumulates.  (Can Veolia be reported to Haringey for dumping in this case?)

What is most annoying is the fact that dumping if reported at the weekend (via internet) won't be acted on until Tuesday - assuming that the message gets passed from the Haringey website to Veolia without delay, which it usually isn't.  So rubbish dumped on Friday can still be there on Tuesday.  I think this is very poor service.

And finally in this rant, the message when holding to speak to one of Veolia's 'agents' [don't they employ people?] is that when one becomes free they will 'endeavour to answer the call'.  Without getting too literal, I can't imagine what background or training a Veolia agent has if answering a phone call requires endeavour.

I should add that I'm in N15.

So, as I said at the start of this, how do you complain?

I've reported 2 problems via email (one re dog poo, one re a broken sink which had been dumped on the pavement) and both were dealt with promptly. The issues I reported may have been dealt with quickly because they were located very near to a primary school.

This from Sarah Macmull on Twitter:

@harringayonline they have a head office - try the marketing department? I used to temp there...pentonville road?

You can telephone their call centre on 020 8885 7700 during normal business hours.

If you don't get a quick response, please get in touch with me or with one of the other local councillors.

My email is David.Schmitz@haringey.gov.uk and by phone number is 07854 002742.

Lib Dem Councillor for Harringay Ward

I'd normally suggest Antill JQ that you search the Council's and Veolia's websites. But I've done this and haven't found it as helpful and clear as I usually do. (Which may of course be my fault. I'm happy to be corrected.)

From your discussion's tags, it seems you live in Antill Road, Tottenham Green ward. And as you seem to have got nowhere so far with the formal reporting lines, I suggest you email the three ward councillors. Their emails are: Isidoros.Diakides@haringey.gov.uk  Bernice.Vanier@haringey.gov.uk   Richard.Watson@haringey.gov.uk  copying the "cabinet" councillor for the Environment Nilgun.Canver@haringey.gov.uk

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

Apologies David. Seems we were composing replies at the same time and I hadn't read yours. Anyway, Antill JQ is now spoilt for choice!

But in any case there seem to be some wider issues here. I've been told that the "single frontline" is joining things up. But so far, this only seems to be the case if viewed from the Albert's Bridge perspective of River Park House. Down on the ground, messy reality is well . . . messy.

Some folk have had great success interacting with Veolia on Twitter (@veolia_es_uk). It may not sound promising but there have been a few corporates whose Twitter streams have given great service.

As long as Veolia and Haringey don't stop at solving one problem at a time.

People posting on this thread seem to be describing: (a) symptoms of systems failures and, linked to this,   (b) the need to go "upstream"to look for and then experiment with different prevention strategies.

Alan, Hugh, David, thanks for the tips.

I thought it might be useful to hear other people's experiences.  I corresponded with Richard Watson last year on other matters, including dog mess on the street and he was very helpful - Richard arranged for a dog mess bin to be put on the street.  Getting people to use it is another matter of course - it is disappointing regularly to see turds sitting directly beneath the bin.

Purple Veolia bag sitting on the corner of Springfield and Antill Road for 5 days now. How can this not be dumping?

It's worse than that. The purple bags act as a magnet for more dumping. (Photo taken in Chesnut Road N17 on 30 March 2012. Click on the photo for a larger version.)

Endorsing and encouraging the Third System

This implicitly validates and endorses what I've described as the Third System.

In other words, there could as well be a sign saying:

Forget your wheelie bin. Don't bother taking stuff to the Reuse & Recycling Centres.

We'll collect it from here. Sooner or (probably) later.

Just to highlight further the low regard Antill Road has among even its residents, I just watched a man take a piss against the side of the car club car he was about to enter. It's 1240 daytime. I give up.

The video posted on YouTube would have gone viral.

coincidence, i sent a complaint to the Chief Exec of Haringey council yesterday about the dog mess in harringay passage and asking if they can clean the sh*t up before the schools open so that the kids in the north and south harringay school & nursery don't take have to step in it. Its a no-brainer really, instead of the guy sweeping it up at 9.30am every day, get him there at 8am.  I am waiting from an answer from Veolia but i aint holding much hope.

Send all your emails to him on kevin.crompton@haringey.gov.uk

the more people that do this, there's more chance they'll keep on top of it. And don't let them fob you off with any sh*t - if you know what I mean(!)
