Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Plaque to be Installed to Honour Haringey’s First World War Conscientious Objectors

Haringey’s 350 First World War Conscientious Objectors will be honoured and remembered with a specially designed plaque installed at a ceremony outside the Salisbury Hotel at 6pm on 15 May 2019, International Conscientious Objectors’ day.

This spot was chosen because it was the site of anti-war protests in the weeks leading up to the declaration of war on 4 August 1914. Since 2014 Haringey First World War Peace Forum has been researching the 350 Haringey men who said no to war with a project ‘Conscientious Objection Remembered’ supported by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.  Activities have included talks, plays, workshops, a sculpture at Bruce Castle, and a walk booklet all telling the stories of these local men and their families.

The plaque, designed by lettering artist Will O’Leary, will be unveiled following short speeches and musical entertainment of the period performed by Patricia Hammond and Matt Redman. All are welcome

Haringey First World War Peace Forum would like to thank Harringay Traders Association, the London Borough of Haringey and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support.
