Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi

Quite new in this forum, so I thought of giving it a go.

Recently moved to Duckett's green area, and I've seen many times the little green space from Belmont Road (between Belmont Ave and Langham road) from the road (when Belmont road goes over the old railway bridge from the defunct Palace Gates railway line).

Today, in my hour exercise allowance , I adventured into Ivatt Way state and I finally discovered a way into that place. I always wondered why there was no entrance from the bridge in Belmont Road.

Does anyone has any info about it? I've done some search and it doesn't even seem to have a name.  Is it of exclusive access to the residents on the state or to the general public?

For clarification, here is the place I'm talking about:

I have no idea about it as recently moved here from the Ladder, so just curious.

Thanks!

Marc

It’s obviously part of the old railway line from West Green to Wood Green. If there’s no access from the roadway, it’s almost certainly part of the estate. I’ve never heard of Council estate property being barred to other users. So my guess is, if you use it with respect, there shouldn’t be an issue. You could always write to Homes for Haringey an see what they say.

Two papers attached - one from Islington which makes it clear that open land forming part of their housing estates is available for communal use. The second paper, from Haringey, suggests that it is probably also available. But isn't clear on the matter.

hi hugh. fantastic. really interesting docs. I've just had a quick read through and I couldn't find anything, but I'll have a look more in details later.

thanks!

The Islington document has this,

The overriding principle is that there should be open access to communal green spaces on housing estates for all estate residents to enjoy. Where there are local issues of misuse of communal green spaces, restrictions to wider public access can be put in place; however access for estate residents should continue.

Without looking through Islington's whole policy set, this offers, for me, a clear steer in the direction of a presumption that unless otherwise advised, wider public access is permitted.

The Haringey document is about their open spaces strategy and makes repeated reference to council estate spaces. It's not as easy to draw a conclusion from this document as it is from the Islington one. But there's reason to think that a little more research on the internet (or an email to your councillor) might yield you a clearer steer in the direction you want,

The Council, principally through its Recreation and Housing Services, provides a range of play facilities in parks, open spaces and on housing estates.

Furthermore, it's not unreasonable to imagine that what happens in Islington may also be true in Haringey.

I would hesitate to encourage assumptions about the law where an error might led to a serious breach of the law. But, in this case we're considering the existence of a regulation, the breach of which would probably at most lead to a ticking-off.
