Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This shows Crouch Hill. The best estimate of the precise location is that it was taken from the Stroud Green side of Crouch Hill, just north of Crouch Hill Station, looking north up the hill towards Crouch End. I think the first church on the right is the Presbyterian Church and the one beyond is the Wesleyan (You can see the spire of the other church between "a" and "Curated" of the watermark - Click View Full Size below right for a larger version of the image). These churches stood almost opposite Shaftesbury Avenue. On the hill beyond there still stood some huge early Victorian mansions with immense gardens. All were gone by the middle of the 20th Century.

From Ordnance Survey Map 1893-95

The area on the right is now the site of the Holly Park estate. The land was bequeathed to provide housing for the poor but a lot of the mature trees still exist and it's a grade 2 listed site of borough importance for nature conservation.  The avenue of trees next to what was the church is still largely there as are a lot of other mature trees.

Thanks for that additional info, Jacq.

There is one surviving Methodist chapel on the site - hard to pinpoint on the map, it's roughly where the Sunday school is marked but aligned differently: alongside the lane rather than end-on to it. It's a handsome early Victorian red-brick building, not in great shape but still in use.

I just noticed there are two Sunday schools! It's the northern one, next to Holly Lodge itself.

Thanks, Matt.

If this is indeed Crouch Hill the image has somehow got reversed.

Looking down Crouch Hill towards Stroud Green the site of the churches should appear on the left (as we see it) not the right.

It is indeed Crouch Hill, but it’s not looking down the hill towards Stroud Green. As I said in my original comment, it’s looking north towards Crouch End. (And it is indeed Crouch Hill).

Did that not become Holly Park Methodist Church? I seem to recall it from the 60s - the minister was a chap called (John) Chidg(e)y I believe?

When I first added this picture I'd forgotten that I'd added a picture of the Presbyterian church from the front. I've added a link to that picture at the bottom of the main text above.
