Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

2nd Annual Haringey Children’s Book Award Ceremony takes place at

Heartlands High, Monday 18th April.

200 children are set to attend the HCBA, which has been going from strength to strength in its campaign to promote literacy in the borough.

Haringey Children’s Book Award, founded by school librarian Helen Swinyard last year, has been designed to promote literacy in Haringey and improve collaboration between schools. The lead up to this year’s award has seen local schoolchildren taking part in literary events, from reading the awards shortlisted books, author visits and writing workshops sponsored by Collage Arts.

Children from Years 5, 6 and 7 have voted for their favourite from a selected shortlist with the winner announced at the Award Ceremony on Monday 18th April at Heartlands High School.

This year, thanks to sponsorship from Collage Arts, around 130 children from ten of the participating schools will have a morning of writing workshops preceding the ceremony, with high-profile nominated authors including SF Said, Philip Womach, Polly Ho-Yen along with last year’s award winner Gill Lewis and shortlister Piers Torday.

The shortlisted books for 2016 are: Phoenix by SF Said, Whistling in the Dark by Shirley Hughes, The boy in the tower by Polly Ho-Yen, The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell, and The Broken King by Philip Womack.

Also attending are Catherine West MP, local Patrons of Reading Matt Brown, Daniel Whelan, Jonny Zucker and Karen McCombie, and The Big Green Bookshop.

Schools wishing to take part in the future should contact Helen at the school to join the mailing list.
