Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Gay life IN Harringay
I am reliably told that there used to be a gay/bi bar in Green Lanes (next to the Salisbury?) in the early eighties. Would a gay bar in Harringay take off again? A friend of mine has money to invest and, with Catch22 in Turnpike Like set to close once the lease runs out, I think it could be a starter. Discuss.

I might knock the decor, but Catch 22 really did have a diverse crowd not just exclusively gay. I went to a gay rock night there that had goths, students and all sorts. Many people, not just gay will be sorry it will close maybe mainly because of it's late licence. I remember when the Irish landlord took it over for a while, he didn't stop it being gay, but the gays still turned up and he was welcoming. He was welcoming in an Irish farmer grunt kinda way (which I grew up with) which added to the charm. Then u go another night and it's dead.
Location is key, as close to a tube station as possible.

I'm not sure feeling threatened has anything to do with London as such.
Generally in the UK, kids learn the importance of aggression at a very early age. Their parents often use it as a mark of discipline and the kids then go on use the same tactic amongst their friends. It's a bit of a vicious circle really.
It also has to do with the fact that certain cultures see homosexuality as lower in the pecking order as themselves and therefore use aggression against members of that particular group, to higher their own standing.
I won't bore you with details, but here in Berlin holding hands in public is/was not an issue amongst ethnic Germans, although the influx of teenagers from other cultures has seen an increase of attacks against gays in recent times; and this is often thought to be caused by paternal violence at home.

Steven, I am going to try to reply to this as pragmatically as possible:
It is clear to all that Germany does not have a great modern history in its treatment of gay people by 'ethnic Germans'.
The frequent rate at which you apportion blame for western society's modern ills on 'other cultures' is perhaps one of the reasons why there isnt such a great contribution to this community website from some of Harringay's many diverse and fabulous communities.
Im just making an observation.
And Im sorry if anyone is offended by this post. I had resolved to stick to light threads after recent comments by members that they felt uncomfortable with angsty threads- but I just felt that I had to respond to this as this is not the kind of comment that I feel should go unchallenged.
Feel free to moderate this if you wish, Hugh and Liz.

Hey Rahman, you're right about the past.. You know, I didn't even consider that when I wrote what I did. I should have done. BUT that was over 60 years ago. More than 80% of Germans today weren't even born then. I just wonder how long they are going to have to be saddled with the crimes of their predecessors?
And also because since I've lived here (nearly 25 years), I've never had one racist or anti-gay remark made against me (from Germans) but I certainly have from other groups. So why should I not say it as it is and pretend that is somehow different, just because it is uncomfortable?
Stll that's not Harringay stuff - so I'm quite happy to remove it. (Let me know Mr Hugh and Mme Liz)
Other people were talking (not me) about how Gay people in Harringay don't feel free to live like the majority do and that was why I added the poster. If it offends, I'll remove it too.
@Rahman.. you can either call me Steve or Stephen.. I'm not that keen on Steven :o)

The poster is lovely, makes me smile, as far as I know, no one has expressed offense, and frankly, if they did, I'd give my standard response of don't read a post about gay life if that's your attitude. As the recent Stonewall campaign poster I saw at the Arena said, 'Some people are gay, get over it'
With regard to this conversation, it may be getting a little OT. How about adding each other as connections and continuing this conversation privately?
Thanks for keeping the recent conversations about appropriate conversations in mind. There's a lot more people reading these posts than we imagine...

The poster is great! I think they should have sent it as a response to all those ridiculous people who complained to ofcom and had the heinz mayo 'gay kiss' advert pulled.

I know a good few people who would show support if a new place opened :) Did your friend have a venue in mind? Does your friend even still wanna do this?

And although it's also an old point does anyone want to write about Harringay's gay history for www.untoldlondon.org? site i edit for london museum about london's history - cover things like exhibitions like the LGBT history one at Bruce castle Museum and other stuff - am keen on a 'granular social history' piece like this ....If you can't be bothered to write it I could interview someone who has lots memories of the various venues over a pint in the salisbury one night....
