Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Around 150 HoL members, including myself, hail from N17. We're outside the site's catchment area, are the other 49 also suffering from 'site envy'?

I'd love to see something like this for my local area, but would there be enough interest locally to make it 'fly'? And how should a membership area be defined? (I'd thought of sticking to the council-defined Bruce Grove and West Green neighbourhood forum 'marriage' - should the catchment area be wider?)

What do others think?

I think it's an excellent idea providing you can find people to run the website.  Linking Bruce Grove and West Green seems sensible.
I'm an N17-er and would be interested.
I'd be interested having moved to West Green (-;
Anything that's better than "In Tottenham" has to be an improvement!!!
At least it purports to support Tottenham, e.g. Spurs, a major local employer

I think this is an excellent idea -to the extent that I have set up a site for N8. The public response has been underwhelming - even my chosen few reliable contributors have vanished from the face of the internet. If you'd like to see my sad monologue it is here http://opinion8.ning.com/.

There is also a nother local site which is getting on better than N8 http://www.bowesandbounds.org/forum but it too I think suffers from the pre-eminence of HoL.

I think B&B is doing pretty well Omotn. I was fortunate in being able to dedicate real time to the project when I set up HoL. It's a slower build up when you can't do that.
I think a minor failing of the HoL model is that it's not easily reproducible elsewhere. This was hard work and took a long time. Hugh seemed to spend the first 6 months talking to himself.
Eh, you sure you're not reflecting on your own experience today rather than mine in 2007? ;o)

Just reflecting on your comment Omotn and I really don't think what you call 'the pre-eminence of HoL' has much to do with the success or failure of other local sites hereabouts. Locally we have the example of stroudgreen.org going great guns just next door.  Go down to south east London and you can't move an inch without stumbling over another lcoal site or blog. There it's been proposed that successful local sites breed others.

I'd hate for your comment to put other people off starting up other local sites because, I'm afraid, I think you're just plain wrong on this. So, take heart budding webbies of Tottenham, t'aint so hard.

I still believe in the pre-eminence of HoL. It is eminent in that it wins prizes and came before B&B and OpinioN8. Pre-eminent (adjective- eminent above or before others; superior; surpassing)

If HoL were not in this position, certainly within Haringey, Gina would not be seeking endorsement and support on these pages.
. The member map clearly shows a geographical spread covering much more than just Harringay, with almost as great a density outside the blue line.

I'd hate for my comment to put other people off. "I think this is an excellent idea." How much more positive do I have to be? Maybe I could go as far as copying the whole idea! Imitation is the sincerest form  . . . .etc. I offer a couple of examples (N8 - learn from my mistakes) and B&B (doing better - learn from what they have done right) and someone interprets me as being negative . It must be the way I tell 'em. Which is perhaps another factor confining me to a monologue.

Some more positive notes:

  • Ning sites are easy to use and set up - even I have managed Facebook and Twitter feeds. (this site http://harboroughbid.ning.com/ took me about 20 minutes to set up and has contributed something to a debate elsewhere)
  • Ning is relatively inexpensive
  • Even if no one ever looks at or responds to what you have written its still (somewhat) satisfying to see your words up on a screen

Agree, Omotn. Hugh would look grand in a Red Hat. I shall take care to address him as 'Your Pre-Eminence' next time I meet him.
