Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was recently on the phone to a business I had a transaction with one year ago. They have the details of a bank debit card I received only one month ago. This was a completely different card to the one I used when I did business with them. They could not understand why they had these details and nor could my bank. Any ideas?

Have you given the business permission to store your card details for future use and used your new card with them at some point in the las month? If yes to both then I wouldn't consider this anomalous. Otherwise - its beyond explanation, bordering on the impossible.
Of course I have not given them my new card details.... That's the whole point of the post?
I meant general permission for them to store card details, and by virtue of using the new one you could have inadvertently 'updated' it...
If it was a credit card, it would be the same long (16 digit) number as your old one - the other (expiry date and security no) will be different. I've not heard of this with a debit card tho... Perhaps a third party transaction?

I have read about this happening with online retalers, where they automatically get the details of your new card. It might even have been a post on here, about Amazon... there was a legitimate explanation but I can't remember it!

Great post, thanks. I have phoned Natwest and their Actionline agent could not understand me, likewise their Chatline, where I was asked to explain what Visa Automatic Updater (VAU) was. No, I will not train their staff. I have made a formal complaint to them which seems the only way to action anything. I urge people to opt out of this as it allows any company you have given your card details to to potentially take money from your card even though you have been issued with a replacement.

Forgot doing your banking/current account/spending online with a High Street bank. Use Revolut.

I'm always encountering bank rules that no-one at the bank knows about.

Example 1: trying to do a Faster Payment to buy a car at 8pm. Log into Bank A to send money to Bank B, but message comes up saying it won't go through until the morning (no use as I need to take car that night). Bank A says Bank B has 'switched off FP machine'. Bank B says cobblers. Eventually work it out by bouncing money through acct at another bank. Later transpires that while both Bank A and Bank B do 24 hr Faster Payments, they don't accept FPs going between Bank A and Bank B after 6pm. No-one at either bank knew this.

Example 2: Card is declined for a contactless transaction. Money definitely in acct. Assume fraud flag, call bank. No, you are limited to 15 contactless in a row before you have to enter a pin (not per day or week or month, ever. Like you're going to remember). No message in decline, embarrassment all round. Again takes 3 customer service people to work it out.

Plus, every time I want to change anything about an account I have to visit the branch. Staff cuts mean no appointments for a month and a half IN THE WHOLE OF LONDON. Hence just swapped banks. Probably going to be just as shit but at least my new debit card is an exciting new colour.
