Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Having never had a pet dog but wanted one, I'm wondering if anyone has a dog they need walked once or twice a week?  As long as it isn't going to bite me or anyone else, I don't mind what kind of breed it is!

I was in the same situation as you last year. I joined up with borrowmydoggy.com. It was only £10 to sign up. They put you in touch with dog owners who need someone to help walk their dog. Usually v busy people who haven't enough time for two daily walks, or even some people who are housebound. I met some lovely people and had some fun walking their nice dog. It helped me to get a feel of dog ownership and I decided against it just now. They also seek people to dogsit for holidays etc. You will find lots of owners very near by and get to look at photos of all the dogs.....

Here's one idea - if you like walking dogs or helping elderly people with pets - please think about becoming a volunteer for the Cinnamon Trust. www.cinnamon.org.uk/volunteers/

It's a great charity which helps elderly people with pets. It's not high maintenance at all, you can say yes or no to any requests, so it's very open. You may not be contacted for help for ages and you can always say no at the time if it's not possible.

If you become a volunteer, when there is an elderly person near you who needs someone to walk her dog or help with a pet, you will be contacted by the Cinnamon Trust to ask if you can help. It's all about building up a network of volunteers to help elderly people with pets. You can be very specific on the volunteer form on what type of tasks or animals you would or would not be able to help with e.g. dog walking or looking after a dog or cat while owner in hospital or taking a cat to vet.

Please tell your friends as they need more volunteers nationally. It's all about giving the elderly peace of mind so that they can get local help for their pet if needed - a pet is often their sole companion so it's important for them to be able to have a cat or dog. I've put previous post about this, here's one cinnamon trust post which gives a lot of information.
If anyone out there knows an elderly person who might need help with a pet, please encourage them to contact the Cinnamon Trust.
If anyone lives near a dog rescue place, they often need volunteers for dog walking.

All dog rescues are always looking for dog fosterers. Fostering is a great idea if anyone is thinking about having a dog -  such as www.oldies.org.uk/get/fostering-dogs

hi ,

ive joined borrow my doggy as well but from another perspective ,im a dog owner, its great site ,met a lot of people as well, and most important i feel a bit safer letting my dog for walks as he and the borrower are insured(third party accidental injury, damage to third party property),have 24/7 phone access to veterinary professionals in any emergency and the borrowers are also verified( at least address and phone)

if is something you feel like doing go for it ,i recommend this site,

and if you do look us up,my name is Marta,we live in the ladder and Alfie (our sweet beagle) is always happy to get extra walks (dont worry he is not a bitter just a extreme licker/kisser

all the best

Marta

I would totally agree with Justine that the Cinnamon Trust is a great organisation.  I've been doing it for a year, walking a dog once a week for an elderly disabled man and now also walking two dogs at weekends while their owner recovers from a broken leg and its been a wonderful opportunity for all concerned

It's really good to hear that, Claire. You're making a big difference and it's enjoyable too.

Hopefully from hearing your story and by spreading the word, other people will be encouraged to become a volunteer for the Cinnamon Trust.

Thank you so much for your replies and ideas.  I'll have a look at borrowmydoggy and cinnamon trust.
