Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I noticed the Harringay Sainsburies and the big Tescos by Ikea in Tottenham got a mention in this piece about shopping frenzy and Black Friday. Sounded pretty grim, but I'm not sure if that's more media spin than reality.

When I hear stuff like this I'm always amazed that stores don't learn from past experience and try and think a bit more about crowd control. Not saying that individuals aren't responsible - but you've got to feel for someone who patiently waits for hours and then just gets flattened by a stampede when the doors open.

Did anyone here go? How did you find it?

From the Guardian article:

“I got a Dyson but I don’t even know if I want it. I just picked it up,” Louise Haggerty, a 56-year-old hairdresser and waitress, said of her 1am trip to the Black Friday sales. “It was mental in there. It was crazy. It was absolutely disgusting, disgusting.”

Haggerty had ventured out to the 24-hour Sainsbury’s in Harringay, north-east London, with a friend in the hope of snapping up a bargain flat screen TV. “But so many people pushed in the queue we didn’t have a chance,” she said. “The poor woman who was second in the queue was pushed out by the crowd of youths, she didn’t get anything.

“People were behaving like animals, it was horrible,” she said. “I only saw two security guards.”

Frustrated with not being able to buy a Blaupunkt 40” TV reduced from £299.99 to £149.99, Haggerty rushed to pick up a Dyson Animal Vac, down from £319.99 to £159.99. “I don’t even know how much it costs, I don’t know even know if I’m going to buy it. I just wanted something,” she said. “There are lads in there three, four, five tellies. It’s not fair.”

Assume you mean the big IKEA in Edmonton?

Yes, always forget it is Edmonton.

It's called IKEA Tottenham now.... I was at the opening night for that to try to bag a £50 leather sofa. Despite being at the front of the queue I failed...

File under Feeding Frenzy.....

Surely be plenty of last years discarded flat screens on street corners come Monday.

I was talking to one of the check out staff at Sainsburys this morning. She was working on Friday and said that while I was busy she didn't see any problems. She also said that none of her colleagues who had done the midnight shift had mentioned the near riot the papers were reporting. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story eh!

Ah yes, missed out Media from Feeding Frenzy.

The underlying subtext seems to be "Well, what would you expect from a bunch a chavs? Now, if it was Harrods......"

They didn't exactly have "riot faces" on if you look at the footage where these have not been conveniently pixelled out. Most are laughing. These were bored people playing up to the camera.
