Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Being a bit nerdy here, but does anyone know why the old street sign on Hermitage Road says it was in the Borough of Stoke Newington? My understanding (and Google agrees) is that the old boundary pre GLC was where the Hackney/Haringey boundary is now, i.e. at the New River in this case. Is the sign wrong?

There are references to housebuilding in the 1880s on Hermitage Road in the Stoke Newington section of 'British History Online, e.g. here http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/middx/vol8/pp151-158#fnn27

Perhaps the boundary was regularised after the formation of the Borough of Stoke Newington in 1899-1900?

Yes there was a twentieth century boundary change. I have a 1950s map of the boundaries of Tottenham borough which shows that Eade Road and the very end of Hermitage between its junctions with Eade Road and Green Lanes used to be in Stoke Newington. I'm guessing this historical oddity was sorted out during the 1965 local government reorganisation.

It was a good deal later than I thought!

I worked on the electoral register in the '80s and can say there was at least one property(and possibly three) in the area of Eade Road, that was partly in Haringey and partly in Hackney. The families paid part-rates to each council, entitling them to entitling them to vote for two councils. Not entirely sure what happened at general elections but presume they voted for the constituency that contained the largest proportion of their property.

The boundary review ended anomalies like this but it also had some radical suggestions, which were given short shrift by the government: ie boundary between Camden and Haringey to become Archway Road and the North Circular to be the boundary between Enfield and Haringey.

Evidence-backed response! Perfect. Thanks for clearing that up, Stuart.

Along the Irish border such anomalies were great for smuggling and made a few families very well off. Alas, we were half a mile north of said boundary which I resent to this day.

I'm trusting that it is not at your location vis a vis the Harringay / Manor House border at which your anger is directed!

"half a mile north" - which county I wonder? And do you think those families will be voting leave? Personally I dread to think of the impact of Brexit on the six counties... as I told the hordes of Leave folk at Wood Green on Saturday. None of them had a clue the UK shares a land border with an EU country. And what might happen if they succeed.

Thanks guys, that's really interesting!
