Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I emailed Islington council to find out more about their CPZ roaming scheme.

http://www.islington.gov.uk/services/parking-roads/parking/where_to...

This is the email I received from Zahur Khan the head of traffic and engineering services in Islington.

Thank you for your email, with regards to the above subject.

The Resident Roamer scheme was developed to specifically help residents and also support local businesses. The scheme is designed to operate during off-peak times in order to provide greater flexibility for residents,  whilst still protecting them from peak hour commuter parking.  As such residents can park in other parts of the borough, outside their CPZ, to access local shops or to visit friends and family so long as they park in resident bays. The costs were minimal and involved the drafting of a legal order to allow for the roamer.

No negative effects have been reported  and the scheme has been very much welcomed. In addition we have not experienced a surge in extra parking pressure and the only real change for residents has been the ability to park for free, at these times.

I hope this information is useful.

Kind regards,

Zahur Khan

If you think it'd be a good idea to have the same scheme in Haringey then please email:

Councillor Canver

Nilgun.Canver@haringey.gov.uk

Expressing your support for the scheme.

Can I suggest that as well as emailing Nilgun - her remit includes parking - you also email the "Leader" and "cabinet" councillors; plus your own three ward councillors. Channelling information through a single individual can often mean that other councillors may be unaware of the strength - and sometimes weakness - of people's views on an issue. It also tends towards an unhealthy concentration of power in just a few individuals.

Thank you, will do.

I think this is very much needed in this borough.   I find it incredible that motorists have to buy a resident's parking permit which is not valid elsewhere in Haringey.   I'm sure that local businesses will benefit from a rethink of the parking permit criteria.

This is a terrific idea. The response from Islington Council is particularly encouraging.

It seems to be a bit of a win-win proposal. Residents benefit from a bit of extra freedom at no extra cost. The council benefits from a low-cost scheme (presumably) resulting in a boost of public opinion
